John and his brother, Rico, quickly adapted to American culture through movies, music and the language. Soon he was mentored by his Uncle Gino who was a stone mason and became hooked on the trade. John always said he was in two wars, as a child in Italy during WW II, and the Korean War where he honorably served the U.S. He enjoyed going "Upstreet” in his younger days where he played ping pong, bocce, bowling and pool. John was proud of his Italian heritage, enjoyed northern Italian food, playing cards and tombola with family and friends. John's lifelong passion for stonework created projects specializing in limestone, granite and marble in PA, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Locally, he contributed to the Midfield Terminal at Greater Pittsburgh Intern'l Airport, Heinz Hall's garden patio and fountain and various downtown structures. In his Glenshaw neighborhood, he helped construct the foundation for the Christ statue at St. Bonaventure Church. He was a proud member of the International Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Union Local 9 for more than 60 years. His quick wit, clever personality, loyalty and unconditional love will be missed. SAMPSON ROBERT EYNON, Sr. Age 89 years of age, recently residing in Austin, Texas, formerly of Ravencrest Road, Pittsburgh, PA died suddenly on March 1, 2015, of complications from a recent accident. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jane Free Sampson; his brother, Floyd H. Smith; their son, Robert and his wife, Debra; their daughters, Virginia Sampson and Barbara Quick and her husband, Rodney. Their grandchildren are Jennifer Jerman, Spencer Sampson, Eliza Ornelas, Gerrit Wheeler, Katherine Dalman, Rebecca Grantz; and great- grandchildren, Savannah, Noah, and Sydney Jerman. Robert and his wife, Jane, spent the majority of their lives living together raising their three children in O'Hara Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Robert received his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami (Florida), followed by a master's in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He met Jane while living in Coral Gables and attending the University of Miami, where he was an active member and served as pledge master of Kappa Sigma. Over his lifetime, he was very committed to his Presbyterian faith and multiple inner city church missions to support society's less privileged individuals. He coordinated efforts to feed and house the homeless in the shelters of both Pittsburgh and Austin. He was also active in providing and transporting food to the needy of Mexico. He served in many leadership positions in his church, community organizations, and historical societies as the study of history was his true calling in life. Robert and Jane were honored at a banquet in 2004 for their community service work in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh. He was a true Christian who lived his faith every day. He never met a stranger and was always ready to lend a helping hand in any way he could. He was unfailingly kind and compassionate to everyone no matter who they were or where they came from. He was humble and generous sharing his time, talents, and resources. He was a great storyteller and was always willing and ready to share whatever he had. He was a published author, with his recent novel, Long Ago and Far Away, based on his WW2 experiences while proudly serving his country in Germany. He later returned to Europe on several business trips related to his profession in the steel industry. One of the highlights of his life was a vacation to Israel to experience firsthand the birthplace of Christianity. He had a lifelong love affair with learning and was constantly reading books on every imaginable subject. He amassed a personal library of thousands of books. He loved to share his knowledge with others and one left every encounter with him feeling more enriched intellectually and spiritually. A light has gone out of the world with his passing. He will be sorely missed by his family and all those who knew him. A memorial service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 6, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Central Presbyterian Church, 200 East Eighth Street, Austin, Texas 78701.
