SNIDER HOWARD 11-22-46 ~ 8-22-12 My dearest Howard, Who said the first year is the hardest? It's still hard for me to believe you've been gone for two years! I miss you terribly. Sometimes the silence is deafening, and your absence is so noticeable, that I don't think I can stand it. At other times, I'm comforted by the fact that you're now at peace. Every day something happens that reminds me of what a kind, loving, and gentle soul you were. How fortunate am I that you chose me to be your wife? You've given me so many wonderful memories, and for that I will love you forever and never forget you. All my love, Sus

MITCHELL KATHERINE MARIE “KATH...

MITCHELL KATHERINE MARIE “KATHY” Age 58, of Murrysville, on August 21, 2014, after a nine month battle against cancer. Kathy was surrounded by family and friends at her passing and is certainly now in heaven with her parents. Kathy grew up in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. Daughter of the late John J. and Katherine Sieg Mitchell; cherished sister of Janet and Mark and his wife, Amanda; loving aunt of Jack, Tucker, and Lily; also surviving are many close relatives and friends who were lucky enough to know Kathy and supported her daily as she bravely fought a relentless disease. After an idyllic childhood in Brownsville, Kathy blazed trails in many directions in the early years of coeducation at Lehigh University, where she earned a B.A. in journalism. She was the first woman sports editor of the Brown and White campus newspaper and of the Epitome yearbook. She was the first woman to broadcast a national championship football game as color commentator on the campus radio station. Kathy was the starting third baseman on Lehigh's first intercollegiate softball team and a fearless running back on the Engineers' flag football team before a knee injury cut short her career. She was a founding member of Gamma Phi Beta's chapter at Lehigh. Her greatest talent, however, was making countless lifelong friends who remember her vividly decades later. Kathy was an avid fan and scholar of all sports, but particularly Pittsburgh sports teams, with her beloved Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates at the top of the list. Her passion for and knowledge of sports lent itself to an early and brief career as a sportswriter after graduation, but, as Kathy noted, she “needed to eat,” so she transitioned to a career as a communications professional at a Westinghouse Electric Corporation plant in Horseheads, NY. She relocated to Pittsburgh with Westinghouse in 1983, and after a long and fruitful human resources career there, she moved to the McKesson Corporation where she was equally as successful in that field. Her most recent position was human resources strategist at Innovation Works, where she leaves many grieving friends and colleagues. Kathy had a deep and strong Eastern Orthodox faith. She was an active member in her church, the St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral on Dawson St. in Oakland, PA, where she was a member of the Parish Council and the Choir. She also worshipped at Saint Ellien Orthodox Church in her hometown of Brownsville. Kathy and her devoted sister, Janet, were extremely close. Along with many cousins and friends, they traveled around the world together and enjoyed life to the fullest. Kathy adored her brother, Mark and his wife, Amanda, and their children, and never missed important school events or performances for Jack, Tucker, or Lily. Kathy was an excellent cook, especially of Middle Eastern dishes, her grape leaves were legendary. She loved to golf and volunteered on a number of charity golf tournament committees, including the Steelers Alumni Golf Tournament. Kathy never met a stranger. Her friends were many and varied, from theater goers to horse racing aficionados in Saratoga, NY, to fellow members of the Steeler Nation. Along with being the life of every party, Kathy was a kind and compassionate person to many, many people. She will be missed more than can ever be measured. Friends may call at the FRANK F. DeBOR FUNERAL HOME, 1065 Brookline Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15226, 412-561-0380, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2014. A Funeral Service will be held at the St. George Orthodox Cathedral on Dawson Street in Oakland, PA, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 25, 2014, with an additional viewing at the church one hour prior to the Funeral Service. Memorial contributions to honor Kathy may be made to the Brownsville Area Revitalization Committee or the Lehigh University Athletic Partnership or the St. George Orthodox Cathedral.
