HAYES MARY MARGARET Mary Margaret Hayes, better known as Mimi, died of natural causes on August 13, 2014, in Barre, Vermont. She was 55 years old. Mimi was born August 29, 1958, in Sewickley, PA and lived most of her life in the Pittsburgh area. She spent her last two years in Vermont near her sister, Nancy. Like many people with Down Syndrome, after the age of 50, Mimi developed dementia, which progressed rapidly in her last year. Mimi's disability inspired her mother, Florence Hayes Manning, to advocate in many ways for services and rights for the developmentally disabled, including helping to create the Amigos, a social and activity group for developmentally disabled adults at the Sewickley Presbyterian Church. Mimi had a cheerful and enthusiastic personality, was loving, humble and nonjudgmental and loved to laugh. She was a bright star in her family and had many friends. Through the force of her personality and her accomplishments, Mimi helped advocate in her own way for a better understanding and acceptance of people with Down Syndrome. She had a strong will and an independent spirit. Mimi showed us what unconditional love felt like, and what pure joy looked like. She loved to sing and dance and was a fan of many musicians, including John Denver, The Monkees, and David Cassidy. She always had a favorite TV show, from The Brady Bunch to Dougie Howser to Emergency and a musical, from Annieto Oliver to High School Musical. She liked to swim in the summer and ski in the winter, and was a participant and medal winner in one of the first Winter Special Olympics. She loved to travel and visit her siblings. Mimi attended St. Anthony's School in Oakmont, PA and graduated in 1979, then worked at Sewickley Valley Hospital and later the 911th Airlift Wing in Coraopolis. She was also a dedicated employee at Achieva's Strip District workshop in Pittsburgh. Mimi was predeceased by her father, Dr. George C. Hayes; and her mother, Florence Hayes Manning. She is survived by her brothers, Andrew Hayes and K.C. Hayes; her sister, Nancy Hayes Kilgore; her niece, Shanti Giampa; and her grand-niece, Koa Plante. A Memorial Service will be held at the Sewickley Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at 2:30 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to benefit the developmentally disabled in Pennsylvania or Vermont to The Achieva Family Trust, 711 Bingham Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203; or to Washington County Mental Health, 201 Hill Street, Barre, Vermont 05641.
