MELLET RUTH MINTA (McKISSICK) Of Enon Rd., Enon Valley, PA, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. She had been in declining health. She was born April 4, 1937, in Kane, PA, where her parents taught school. She was the eldest child of Clarence B. and Beryle Mershimer McKissick. They moved to the New Castle area after a short time in Long Beach, CA. Her father taught math at Mt. Jackson High starting in 1943. She was valedictorian of her class and also received honors at Youngstown University and the University of Pittsburgh, where she received her master's degree in social work. She belonged to the National Association of Social Workers and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha National Sorority. Ruth was licensed to practice in both Ohio and Pennsylvania. She was employed by the Federal Government as a drug and alcohol counselor in Camp Darby, Livorno, Italy. She also worked at Woodside Receiving, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and Veterans Administration. She worked as a psychiatric social worker at the Columbiana County Counseling Center for 20 years. Although she worked in several states and overseas, she always returned to Pennsylvania as her home. She enjoyed her work and was a dedicated social worker. She had numerous interests and collections, they included: religious nativities, rock and roll music, Rita Hayworth memorabilia, reading, a love of St. Bernard and Sheltie dogs, her beloved Boston Celtics and, most of all, her loyalty to her family. She was a member of Christ the King Parish and had a particular devotion to the blessed Virgin and St. Anthony. As far as a couple go, “Marty and Ruthie” had many common interests. His parents were born in Ireland and instilled in him a love of Ireland. They traveled extensively, enjoyed their weekend trips to Notre Dame games, Road Scholar trips, Elderhostel weeks, Pittsburgh activities and family functions. Ruth enjoyed clothes shopping, talking and a good laugh, Ireland and anything Irish. She had traveled to Ireland five times, with Maggi, her mother, a friend from Italy and, of course, with Marty. She found each trip more memorable and she took classes at Trinity College, Dublin, one summer. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband, Martin James Mellett. She is survived by her brothers, John (Pat) and Ted (Judith); sister, Mary Margaret, also known as “Maggi”; stepson, Joseph; her beloved nieces, Mary Heather, Molly, and Katie; nephews, John Patrick and Phillip; and many other cousins and relatives. Ruth especially wanted to extend to her family a grateful appreciation. She wanted to thank John for the early years. Ted for the middle years. Her sister and best friend, Maggi, for the last years. Ruth was devoted to her nieces and nephews and they were especially close to her. A Memorial Service for Ruth will be scheduled at a later date. Ruth's wishes were to have you make a donation to your favorite charity in her memory or to The Glenmary Home Missions, 4119 Glenmary Trace, P.O. Box 465618, Cincinnati, Ohio 45246. ELKIND SAMUEL H. FORMERLY OF T...

ELKIND SAMUEL H. Formerly of the Gateway Towers at Gateway Center, died on June 22, 2014, just a few weeks short of his 96th birthday. He was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated from Boston University with a degree in music. He served in the Army during WWII from March 1942 through January 1946. With only a few short weeks to practice the violin after returning from almost four years overseas, he auditioned for The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and spent 47 years as a member of the 1st violin section, happy to be working with such talented musicians and esteemed colleagues. He had the great good fortune to work with all of the symphony's well-known conductors from Fritz Reiner to Lorin Maazel, as well as most of the world-famous soloists of classical music during the last half of the 20th century. The pops concerts afforded him the opportunity to also work with the greats of jazz, pop, and comedy: Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Danny Kaye, and Jack Benny to name a few. He was also honored to be invited by Fred Rogers, along with three other members of the symphony, to play a Haydn string quartet for “King Friday” on a broadcast of “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.” In addition to the regular symphony season, he spent many happy summers in Boston playing with Arthur Fiedler and The Boston Pops, including the July 4th concerts which were televised nation wide. Furthermore, he, along with some other members of the Pittsburgh Symphony, also spent a number of summers playing in The Chautauqua Symphony, part of the well-known cultural, educational, and recreational institute in Chautauqua Lake, New York. Although he loved his chosen profession, the great love of his life was his family and friends. Sadly, he was predeceased by his wife of 40 years and the mother of his two daughters, Shirley Dreyfus Elkind, who died in 1985. His second wife, Judith Dalin Lee Elkind, also sadly predeceased him in 2004 after 15 years of marriage. In 2012, he moved from Pittsburgh to be closer to his family. He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Elkind McKenna of Rockaway Township, New Jersey and Janet Elkind Finfrock of Portland, Maine; as well as his two beloved granddaughters, Lauren and Leslie McKenna. Everyone who knew him saw a remarkable man, a talented musician, a kind and humble friend, and a generous and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was cremated and in a private ceremony will be laid to rest next to his first wife, Shirley, in Sharon Memorial Park in Sharon, Massachusetts. Because of his hope that children will continue to be inspired by the gift of classical music, and because of his concern for the continual dwindling of funding for the arts, a gift in honor of Samuel H. Elkind may be made to The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Development Department, 600 Penn Avenue, Pgh., PA 15222. These contributions will be earmarked for free school time concerts for elementary and middle school children in the city of Pittsburgh and for educational programs in music. BENNETT ROBERT “BOBBY” RALPH A...

BENNETT ROBERT “BOBBY” RALPH Age 65, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, formerly of Hazelwood, PA, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Tatum) Bennett; beloved Teddy, Moose, Marvin, and Paulie; brother-in-law of James “Goose” and Linda Tatum of Blairsville, GA, and Gary (Linda) Tatum of Boca Raton, FL; uncle to his cherished “little girl”, Erin Montgomery of Pittsburgh, PA and Seth and Lori Tatum of Boca Raton, FL. Bob was the longtime proprietor of Yesterday's, a tavern and restaurant in Greenfield (Pittsburgh), with his business partner and lifelong friend, Jim “Monk” Montgomery. They had the best times of their lives at Yesterday's, and he often said he wouldn't trade those friendships he made, which continued for his lifetime, for all the money in the world. Yesterday's was the “in” place to go for many Greenfielders and a local legend, until they sold the business in 2000. Many said it was the “end of an era.” Bob was a 1971 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and continued his support and love of the Panthers throughout his life. He also held memberships in Dallas Lodge No. 231 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite and Syria Shrine, beginning with his initiation in 1970. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the BJPQH Therapeutic Riding Center in Branson, MO, and was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. Bob's love of the beach, seasonal trips to North Wildwood, NJ, Myrtle Beach, SC, St. Thomas, VI, Kona and Maui, HI, led him to move to Fort Lauderdale in 2000, where he and Kathy enjoyed the sun and surf from their oceanfront condo. He never sold his house on Hazelwood Avenue or severed his ties to the Burgh. He founded Bennett Buildings Inc., a steel buildings sales company in 2005, where he was president. Bob often said that he “wasn't here for a long time, he was here for a GOOD time” and that remained his credo until his death. He was a steadfast believer in our Lord and was convinced that we shall all meet again one day. So, while our hearts ache, especially the light of his life, Kathy, it is with the utmost sincerity that he wished all to celebrate his life and the good times we shared, and to remember that he will be waiting to share them again. “I carry your heart with me, and I will carry it in MY heart and am never without it, wherever I go.” Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2014, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15207. Interment will follow in the Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made in Robert's memory to the National Kidney Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to KALIS - McINTEE FUNERAL HOME, Wilton Manors, FL.
