FERGUSON ALBERT B., JR., M.D. ...

FERGUSON ALBERT B., Jr., M.D. June 10, 1919, to August 20, 2014. Albert B. Ferguson, Jr., M.D., passed away the evening of August 20, 2014. Dr. Ferguson was a resident of Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania and Kingwood, Pennsylvania. He was born in New York City on June 10, 1919. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1941 and from Harvard Medical School in 1943. After spending three years with the U.S. Marines in the Pacific area, Dr. Ferguson trained in surgery and orthopaedic surgery in Boston Children's Hospital, Peter Bent Brigham, and Massachusetts General Hospitals. In 1953, he was appointed the Silver Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, where he remained until his retirement in 1986. Dr. Ferguson was honored by the British Orthopaedic Association and the Japanese Orthopaedic Society with honorary fellowships. He served as president of the American Orthopaedic Association, a founding member of the Hip Society, and president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Ferguson was recognized for his contributions to orthopaedic surgery by the American Orthopaedic Association in 2006 and by the Pennsylvania Medical Society by their Distinguished Service Award in 2007. Dr. Ferguson authored numerous articles related to orthopaedic research and many well-known orthopaedic texts relating to children's and adult orthopaedics, metals and engineering in orthopaedic surgery, and the treatment of athletic injuries. The graduates of his training program held professorships in orthopaedic surgery in many medical schools in the United States as well as in England, Japan, Korea, and Turkey. Dr. Ferguson was a member of the Fox Chapel Golf Club. For over 40 years he undertook the development of a tree farm in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Dr. Ferguson was married to the late Louise Enequist Ferguson for over 60 years. They had four children, Sanford, who is married to Kelly Westhoff Ferguson, Bruce, who is married to Rose Marie Emanuele Ferguson, Gary, who is married to Frances Calvanese Ferguson, and Laurie, who predeceased him. They had 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. No visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, 384 Fox Chapel Road at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2014. FRITZ-MATHIS MILDRED MILLIE October 15, 1922, to August 16, 2014. Age 91, of Beaver, formerly of Pittsburgh. Millie died peacefully at home with family by her side. She was preceded in death by Margaret and Edward Brophy and Raymond Fritz, Sr. She lived a full life devoted to her children, Donald Fuzzy (Mary Jo) Fritz and Raymond Buddy (Lani) Fritz ; seven grandchildren, Scott (Dana) Fritz, Wendy Fritz, Lance (Rebecca) Fritz, Dan Fritz, Amy (Brendan) Blanton, Eric Fritz, and Mandy (Mike) Parker; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was blessed to enjoy a wonderful second marriage to Victor A. Mathis, Jr., who preceded her in death. She was loved by his children, Fred (Carol) Mathis, Rebecca (Joe) Greco, Skip (Mary Jean) Mathis, and Patricia (Jim) Tracy; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was the youngest of six children, Ed Brophy, Betty Sis Scanlon, Chuck Brophy, Tom Brophy, and is survived by her sister, Babe Crowley. Her fierce, unwavering love, support, concern and commitment to her family were just some of the multitude of qualities that set her apart. Her zest for life, openness to new adventures and unwavering faith will remain an inspiration to many. She loved to play cards with her closest friends, Gloria, Wilma, Rita, Barb, and Linda, but most of all cherished the time spent with family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all. SULLIVAN ERIC DOUGLASS Age 75, formerly of Adrian, MI, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg, PA. He was born on March 31, 1939, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Robert T. and Dorothy Dietrich Sullivan. He graduated from Adrian College, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education. He spent his career as an elementary principal at Sand Creek Elementary. He was the mayor of Adrian, MI and held several positions in City Council. He served on numerous charity boards and was the Housefather for the Adrian Theta Chi fraternity for many years. He will be missed by many. He attended the Emanuel Baptist Church and Christ Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his two brothers, Robert (wife Geraldine) and Frederick; sister-in-law, Patricia; and eight loving and devoted nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his brother, William; sister-in-law, Carol; and niece, Susan Conboy. BURGUNDER WILLIAM ALBERT Of McKees Rocks and Brookline, born September 5, 1919, died August 24, 2014, at the age of 94. Beloved husband for 68 years of Lydia McMahon Burgunder; dear, devoted father of Ann F. (Robert I. Randall, companion), Paul R., William A., Jr., Thomas J. (Carolyn Mozlack, companion), Mark G. (Cynthia Koehler), and Albert T. (Anne Stanko); proud grandfather of Lauren M., Mark G., Jr., Ryan William., Quinten A., and Xavien I.; brother of Virginia Dorrenbacher, Sister Marcella Mary Burgunder, S.C., and John D. Burgunder. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert D. Burgunder and Marcella Rushton Burgunder; sister, Margaret A. Gast; and brother, Robert L. Burgunder. Bill entered the life insurance business as an agent for Union Mutual Insurance Company and went on to establish the W.A. Burgunder and Associates Insurance Agency. In 1958, he obtained his designation as a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), and became president of the local chapter in 1960. He was a successful insurance agent for over 50 years serving McKees Rocks and the immediate area with honesty and integrity. His election to the President's Club of Union Mutual recognized his industry achievements and his counsel to his clients. Service to his community and to his church was central in Bill's life. A member of the Ohio Valley Hospital Board of Directors, he served as Chairman of the Board from 1978-1989 and chaired the building committee for the hospital's major expansion in 1978. He served on the Board of Directors of the Mckees Rocks Boys Club and as a longtime member of the McKees Rocks Rotary Club, he was recognized for his service as a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served for many years on the St. Pius X Church Finance Committee, was active as an usher and participated in numerous parish social activities. Above all, Bill was deeply committed to his family as a loving brother and husband and a caring dad and grandfather. He played a strong and formative role in the lives of his children, emphasizing education, service to community and the importance of family ties. GAVULA ALEXANDER ALEX Beloved son of Ann Gavula and the late George Gavula, passed away on August 16, 2014. He was a Morgantown resident for more than 35 years and spent his youth living in Greenfield and Squirrel Hill, Pennsylvania. Alex was known in the Morgantown Community for his leadership at West Virginia University radio station U-92. Alex loved U-92 and he was the station's biggest cheerleader. He brought real world experience that spurred the career dreams of countless students he mentored. In addition to being a member for the original launching committee of the radio station, he held positions within the station of broadcast engineer and general manager. Morgantown television viewers heard Alex's voice on promos for WWVU-TV in the early 1980s, as he was also on that station's production staff. His love of broadcasting also took him to the ESPN sports television network, where he was the traveling audio assistant for Thursday Night College Football starting in 1988. In 1990, he joined the regular ESPN Sunday Night Baseball crew and was a key member of it for 24 years. This included being nominated for an Emmy in 2007 for audio on Sunday Night baseball. In addition to pinning a microphone on two Presidents, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Alex worked on President Obama's first inauguration broadcast for ABC News. Alex was an Eagle Scout of the Eagle Scouts of America where he was recognized for his leadership abilities, service, and commitment. Alex was preceded in death by grandparents, Mary and Walter Kurach and Mary and Stephen Gavula; and uncles, Steven Gavula and Bernard Osilka. He is survived by his mother, Ann; aunts, Mary Osilka, Anna Markey, and Jeanie Gavula; several cousins and many dear friends and colleagues.
