She was born February 17, 1935, in New Kensington; a daughter of the late Joseph and Frances (Bagaciunas) Jurgaitis. Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the Accounts Receivable Department for ALCOA of New Kensington, and was at one time employed by Paper Craft of Pittsburgh. Moche was a member of the Italian Club, of Renton; she loved to garden and bake pies and was a very passionate Political Activist in the Renton area. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Merle A. Cuddy DeMichiei; two sisters, Anna Zupick and Josephine Hirak. Surviving are two brothers, John Chasarik, of Mt. Pleasant and Edward Chasarik, of New Kensington and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and a great-great-nephew, Maxwell. DR. JOANNE ROSE OLECK, M.D. Age 65, passed away peacefully after a brief illness in her Moon Township home on Thursday, December 12, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was born and raised in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Gilda (Bevilacqua) Fickulak. She is survived by her loving husband, Michael Oleck, and one daughter, Halley (Matt) Schwartz of Northfield, Minnesota; two sisters: Diane (Dan) Baker and Nancy (Carl) Maronde; sisters-in-law, Margaret (Leon) Wilkerson, Shirley (the late Barry) McHugh, and Barbara Oleck; four nieces and six nephews; her precious companion, Angel and grand-dogs, Zoe and Cato. Joanne was a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry and Biophysics, a Master of Science Degree in Human Genetics, and a Doctor of Medical Science Degree, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Following a residency at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN, Joanne practiced at many local hospitals including: Allegheny General Hospital, UPMC Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Magee Women's Hospital, and Jefferson Hills Center, and was an associate in private practice. She volunteered many years traveling to Guatemala with Surgicorps International using her medical skills to care for underprivileged women. She had many hobbies and interests including art, music, and travel. Joanne recently attained a copyright for her original design trademark for her hand painted silk scarves. She worked her way through school as a docent at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and as an EMT. Joanne was devoted to her family, friends, many patients, and her family pets. MICHAEL P. SCHAFFER, SR. Age 64, of Pittsburgh, formerly Youngstown, OH and Miami, FL after a brave battle with severe health problems on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. Beloved father of Michael, Jr. and Deanna Schaffer; grandfather of Aviana; brother of Elaine Kovak and Steve Schaffer; best friend and love of Debra (DeRobio) Schaffer. Michael was a talented musician who enjoyed playing guitar in his youth for various local music acts through his 1973 graduation from North Catholic High School. After a number of years working in the transportation industry, Michael spearheaded the formation of a reform slate to overtake leadership of his local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (Local 377) in Youngstown, OH and through that leadership helped to establish fair election bylaws to assist in the elimination of union corruption while also working to secure fair contracts and working conditions for numerous members of his local. Michael continued until his death to volunteer instruction and counsel for future labor leaders through the Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU) reform group when he wasn't enjoying the fruits of retirement by partaking in his favorite pastimes of viewing baseball, football, and making delicious BBQ food. PATRICIA A. VARLEY Age 71, of Moon Township since 1977, formerly of Carnegie, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at UPMC Mercy. She was born in Pittsburgh on May 24, 1948 to the late Patrick A. and Eva (Paskovitch) Smith. She is survived by her sons, the loves of her life who she raised by herself, Mark Patrick (Rebecca) Varley of Orlando, FL and Matthew John Varley of Mt. Lebanon. She is also survived by her maternal cousins, Janet, Penny, Eric, Claudette, Marion, her loving extended family and many dear friends. A graduate of Bishop Canavan High School in 1966, Patricia obtained her BA in Education from Penn State University and her MA degree in Education from the University of Pittsburgh and was a member of both Alumni Associations. She was a teacher at the Diocese of Pittsburgh Schools and St. Margaret Mary Kindergarten. She continued her career with the State of PA as a caseworker for the Department of Public Welfare retiring after 27 years. She loved flower gardening and was especially passionate about Daylilies and was a member of the Iris and Daylily Society of Pittsburgh. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena, an officer in Christian Mothers, member of the Ladies Society and Tuesday morning Rosary Group. For 35 years, she enjoyed creating ceramics to enjoy and share. JOAN P. HAWKINS On Wednesday, December 11, 2019, age 82, of Forest Hills. Joan was born to Irene Palchak on February 27, 1937, in Braddock, PA. In 1956, she married the love of her life, Donald R. Hawkins, and they had six children. Prompted by a health scare with her husband, Joan went back to school and became a nurse, despite the fact that she had six young children at home, finishing near the top of her class at Columbia Hospital. She later moved to Forbes Metro and then worked in utilization review for Highmark. After retirement she enjoyed living with her husband at Plantation Landings in Haines City, FL, for 17 years. Joan enjoyed reading a good mystery, playing cards, and being surrounded by her kids and grandkids. Despite enduring many years of illness, she was always quick with a smile and appreciated any attention showered on her. She was a gentle soul with a good sense of humor and will be greatly missed. Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Donald R. Hawkins. MARTIN PAUL "MARTY" CHABALA Age 89, of St. Johns, FL, formerly of Bridgeville and Cranberry Twp., PA, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2019, while under the care of Community Hospice at Bailey Family Center For Caring in St. Augustine, FL. Born May 4, 1930, in Bridgeville, he was the son of the late John E. and Anna Janosky Chabala. Marty proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War from 1949-1950 and in the reserves after that. He was a member of St. Ferdinand Parish in Cranberry Twp., and a former member of Holy Child Parish in Bridgeville (formerly known as St. Agatha Parish), where he also belonged to the Men's Club. He retired from Universal Cyclops Steel as a Metallurgical Lab Supervisor after 44 years of service. Marty was also a member of the American Legion in Bridgeville. In his free time, he was an avid golfer, bowler, and he entertained people of all ages with his honky-tonk piano playing. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. Marty leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 56 years, Loretta M. Bob is also survived by nieces and nephews, Stacy Bridge and Scott (Lesley) Berthold; Gary (Sharon) McMaster, Robert McMaster, Heather Rile and Holly McMaster, and also several grandnieces and grandnephews. Bob was a retired employee of North Braddock Borough and was a lifelong member of Muhleman Methodist Church. In his spare time, Bob was an expert at refurbishing used and discarded vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers. Once his repairs were finished, he made those items available to anyone who needed one. MARY CATHERINE (LEWIS) COWELL Age 86, of Greensburg, formerly of Plum, was welcomed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on December 12, 2019. Beloved wife of the late James J. Cowell. Loving mother of Joseph (Sally) Cowell, Dan (Barb) Cowell, Mike Cowell, Tim (Larisa) Cowell, and Karen (Tom) Avis. Cherished grandmother of Joshua, Jacob, Katelyn, Elizabeth, Monika, John and Anya; and great-grandmother of Eva. Also survived by her siblings, Michael (Carol) Lewis, Nancy (Randy) Brune, and Loretta (Ron) Seigley. Preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Anna (McElhinney) Lewis; brother, Thomas Lewis; and sister, Jeanne Lewis. Mary devoted her life to her children and grandchildren, and had a deep religious faith that she proudly passed on to her family. ANTHONY ROBERT BOWERS Age 71, of Ross Twp., passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, at Butler Memorial Hospital. He was born November 29, 1948, in Ligonier, PA, to James Franklin Bowers, Jr. and Maryann Werner Bowers. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War stationed in Korea and a member of the Laborers Union Local #373. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Linda (Mannering) Bowers; his children, Heather and Tony (Kayla) Bowers, Jr.; his brother, James Franklin Bowers III (Mary); three sisters, Marie Besser, Helen Noble and Veronica (Sis) Miskovich; three brothers-in-law, Tom (Michelle) Mannering, Terry (Kelly) Mannering and Ted (Kathy) Mannering; and many nieces and nephews.
