ROBERT PATRICK VAN DER MAELEN Age 35, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2019. He was the much loved son of Robert Van Der Maelen and Mary Lou (Martinac) Van Der Maelen and was his sister, Marieke's, best friend. A graduate of Central Catholic High School, Bobby earned his BA from the University of Pittsburgh. He was employed as a Project Manager at PA Health and Wellness, where he exhibited a talent for analyzing and solving problems. Bobby was nominated for, and a graduate of, Leadership Mahoning Valley, a highly respected program for the development of community leaders in Ohio. Friends and colleagues speak of the positive impact that Bobby had on the lives of many: he listened, counseled, mentored, and spoke the truth. He loved his Aunts and many cousins, and cared deeply for his friends. His last gift was the donation of his kind heart and multiple organs to others through CORE, the Center for Organ Recovery & Education. Friends received at McCABE BROS INC. JOYCE ANN WALL FERNACZ Age 73, of Pittsburgh, passed away on September 16, 2019. Joyce is survived by her beloved Husband of 55 years, Jerald Fernacz; Mother of Jamie (Tony) Sauro, James Fernacz, and Julie (Kevin) Simurda. Grandmother of Anthony Sauro, Callie Sauro, Kendall Simurda, Cameron Simurda, Austin Fernacz, and Katrina Fernacz, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her Father, William Wall and Mother, Ruth Wall. Joyce was a passionate woman who always put family and others first. She loved picnics, going out to eat, and spending her time with friends and family. CAROL ANN (PAZIN) SCIULLI Of Munhall formerly of Bloomfield, Carol passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 age 76. She is proceeded in death by her beloved husband Giuseppe Sciulli and son Giuseppe Sciulli Jr. “JJ”. She is survived by daughters Faustina “Tina” Sciulli, Rita (Eric) Calfo and Lisa (Scott) North; her grandchildren Eric Jr, Danielle, Chelsea, Justin and Francesca; her brother Mickey Pazin and extended family. Carol lived a life of unselfish devotion to her family. She was a woman who knew the Lord and found her strength in Him especially during these past few years. "MARTY" JOSEPH M. FLAHERTY Of Duquesne, PA on September 16, 2019. Marty studied at St. Pius and St. Vincent seminaries and Duquesne University concentrating on Theology, Philosophy and Education. He was the son of the late John F. and Ruth (Griffin) Flaherty and was predeceased by his brothers, Rev. Thomas J. Flaherty and John T. “Jackie” Flaherty. Marty is survived by his sisters and brother, Mary Frances Flaherty of Duquesne, Anne Marie Flaherty-Brooks of Richmond, VA and Duquesne, Ruth A. Flaherty of New York, NY and Patrick J. Flaherty (Barbara) of Ligioner, PA. Marty was a kind and generous person, especially to those less fortunate. He will be missed by family and friends for his wit and sense of mischief. His sudden death leaves great sorrow, only somewhat diminished by memory. GILDA S. (CORTESE) TASSONE Age 91, of Moon/ Coraopolis area all her life, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at Allegheny General Hospital from a stroke. She was born on April 10, 1928, in Coraopolis, one of five to the late Pietro and Annina (Chiodo) Cortese. Gilda was born and raised in Coraopolis and there she met the love of her life, Rocco D. Tassone, who survives her. They were married October 8, 1949, just days short of their 70th wedding anniversary. Together, they were blessed with three loving sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Susan of Wexford, Gary and Anna of Chippewa and Mark and Angela of Kennedy; cherished grandmother of Matthew (Isabel), Lisa (Jordan) Knapp, Tina (Andrew) Miller, Jarrett (Rebecca), Anthony (Jing), Daniel, Stephanie (Tyler) Deluco and Enrica; proud great grandmother of Elena, Marcelo, Rocco, Carter and expecting two more, one in November and December; well-loved sister of Dina Madia of Coraopolis and the late Mary Mastrangelo, Nick and Tony Cortese; also loving nieces and nephews. Gilda was a member of St. Joseph Church and former Christian Mother. She had worked at Laughlin Children's Center in Sewickley. Gilda was the ultimate loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, her greatest joy was her family. She loved to cook and spoil them all. She just reveled in her family and completed their lives with her love. ALBERT H. SNIDER, JR. Who was born on July 20, 1926 to Albert H. and Metta Marie in Fairmont, WV, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2019 surrounded with the love of his immediate family. He has now joined his beloved wife, Madonna Jean, in eternity. He is survived by his loving daughters, Shelley R. Palmer (Arthur) and Pamela J. Norton (Thomas); and grandchildren, Brittany, Blake, and Kelley Norton. In 1944, he entered the United States Army serving as Rifleman with Company “G” 35th Infantry Regiment on Philippine Island. With the declaration of the end of WWII, he was sent to Japan to engage in military police activity. He took great pride in reminiscing about this period in his life. After discharge, Albert began a career in bus maintenance initially with Trailways and later with Greyhound. With time, he became a bus driver carrying passengers to most of the major cities in the northeast. He then met and married his beloved Donna. For 41 years, they enjoyed a deep and loving relationship. Touring and camping the sites of America gave Albert and Donna great joy in taking their family to 42 states. He retired in 1986 having driven his passengers safely for 34 years. During Albert's years of retirement, he spent his days repairing small appliances, training his Golden Retriever, Angel, and traveling with relatives. In 2000, he suddenly lost the love of his life, Donna. His beautiful smile and inviting demeanor resulted in many friends, whose relationships he held dearly. Wherever he went, he embraced life and enjoyed it to the fullest. His grandchildren were a vital presence in Pappal's life in bringing him much love, laughter and pride. Albert will be missed dearly by all of those whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Dutilh United Methodist Church, 1270 Dutilh Rd., Cranberry Twp., PA 16066, with Rev. Tom Parkinson, officiating. In remembrance of Albert and his lifestyle, please make an effort to “Pay It Forward” to others by providing a small service or kind gesture. Jean is survived by her beloved daughter, Barbara (Herb) Zehnder and special niece, Carol (Ray) Coulter. Cherished grandma of Amy (Dave) Gruska and Justin Zehnder.
