JAMES MABON CHILDS, JR. A resident of Raleigh for 36 years, James Mabon Childs, Jr. died peacefully at home on July 10, 2019. He was surrounded by his loving wife, three daughters and three sisters. Mabon was born January 14, 1950 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late James Mabon Childs, Sr. and Sally Hillman Childs. Mabon attended St. Edmund's Academy in Pittsburgh, graduated from The Taft School in Watertown, CT, and earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mabon enjoyed a career in advertising starting at Ketchum, MacLeod & Grove, Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA. He was recruited to McKinney in 1983 and was happy to return to the Tar Heel State. He was a creative thinker and an exceptional wordsmith - firmly believed in writing and then re-writing. And when it came to grammar, it was perfectly fine to break the rules as long as you knew the rules. Mabon served as an ad hoc member of the Saint Mary's School marketing committee from 2011 through 2016. Beyond his own children, Mabon was a mentor to younger generations. He was always happy and willing to give career (and general life) advice to those seeking it. Mabon was a man of many talents - a self-professed art historian and a sophisticated collector of magnets, beer coasters and hats. Mabon loved the outdoors, especially the pristine lakes and trails of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. He spent his summers at the Adirondack League Club in Old Forge, NY where he enjoyed golfing, fishing, rowing boats, listening for loons and socializing. Mabon was a proud member of the Carolina Country Club, Adirondack League Club and Thendara Golf Club. Above all, Mabon loved spending time with his family. He adored his daughters and six grandchildren and it was no secret that he preferred to sit at the kids table whenever he got the chance. Mabon is survived by his kickass wife, Holly, daughter and son-in-law Frazer and Adam Roche and granddaughters Landon and Lucy of Raleigh, NC, daughter and son-in-law Ellie Childs and Tim Romano and granddaughters Mabel and Blair of Boulder, CO, and daughter and son-in-law Margot and Will Stanley and grandson Harvey and granddaughter Elsie of Raleigh, NC. Mabon is also survived by his three sisters, Marguerite Hillman Childs Detmer and Tom of Denver, CO, Laura Childs Saverin and Ken of New Canaan, CT, Sally Childs Walsh and Alec of Basking Ridge, NJ, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Service of Thanksgiving for his Life will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on 120 E Edenton St, Raleigh, NC 27601 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2019. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Be The Match (bethematch.org) or The North Carolina Museum of Art (ncartmuseum.org). Arrangements by BROWN-WYNNE FUNERAL HOME, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

NANCY WINANS KENNEDY Of Mt. Lebanon, on Friday July 12, 2019. Born Frances Carol Winans on February 27, 1937 in the family home on Spencer Ave. in Pittsburgh, Nancy was the eighth of ten children born to Lawrence and Rosalia (Osborne) Winans. Nancy obtained her moniker from her two oldest sisters after an animated character and the name stuck. She was educated at St Wendelin's school where she graduated in 1955. It was while attending high school at St. Wendelin's that Nancy met the love of her life, Charles George Kennedy, the dashing young man whom she married in 1958. The Kennedys were married for 61 years and had four children, living in Pittsburgh, California, Mt. Lebanon, Mansfield, OH for many years, and then returning to Pittsburgh to be closer to family during her final illness. Nancy is predeceased by her parents, her three oldest sisters, Patricia, Lorraine and Marjorie (who died as an infant). Nancy is also predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Julie Miller. In addition to her husband, Nancy is survived by her brothers Thomas Winans, Charles (Margaret) Winans, William (Cathie) Winans, and Lawrence (Fern) Winans, her beloved sister Marilyn Bleriot and Kathleen Koepfer. Nancy is also survived by her four children and seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren to whom she was always devoted. The Kennedy children are Sean (BethAnn), Leah Killeen, Charles (Chip) and Heather Martin (Arick). Nancy is also survived by many nieces and nephews who admired and loved her. Nancy took great joy in her family and enjoyed many happy times with them at her homes and theirs and on epic annual summer vacations spent at Bethany Beach Delaware. Nancy was raised and died in the belief that death is a transition and that we will be reunited with God and with one another. She is now reunited with her parents and grandparents and sisters in the presence of God to live in joy with no more sickness, pain or regret. We pray that this strong and beautiful woman will pray for and watch over us until we are one day reunited with her in a place where every tear will be wiped away. Family and friends will be received at LAUGHLIN CREMATION & FUNERAL TRIBUTES, 222 Washington Road, Mt. JOSEPH "JOE" HREBENAK Passed away at his residence in Findlay Township, PA, on July 10, 2019, at the age of 71. Joe was born on May 31, 1948, in McKees Rocks, PA to Joseph and Anna Hrebenak. He graduated from McKees Rocks High School in 1966. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy where he spent 14 happy years traveling the world and serving his country. While in the Navy, he went on to earn a bachelor's and master's degree in business administration from New Hampshire College. In 1973 he met the love of his life, Jeanne. The two were married a year later and had almost 45 years together. In 1981 they welcomed their daughter Laura into the world, whom they thoroughly spoiled. Joe dedicated his life to making sure that his family was loved and provided for. Joe worked for 33 years as a professor at Community College of Allegheny County where he won numerous awards. His interactions with his students were his favorite part of the job and it showed. It was hard to run even simple errands without having one of his former students stop him to say hi and let him know how much his unorthodox teaching methods, and the life lessons he doled out while teaching, had impacted their lives. Joe faced the world with an acerbic wit and a heavy dose of sarcasm. He liked to present a tough exterior and pretend that he didn't care about anyone but those close to him knew what a farce that was. He was the kind of person that would give a stranger the shirt off his back without a second thought. He also loved to feed people. Every week he would bring in hundreds of cookies and brownies to students, always making sure to have enough extra to feed anyone else who might have needed a pick me up. Joe was an avid weightlifter, even until the day he passed away. During his free time, you could find him outside in his beloved garden or splitting wood with the biggest maul he could find. When his wife was able to convince him to take a break from the yardwork, Joe loved taking day trips to the numerous historical and archaeological sites in the area. He was also a huge animal lover, and in addition to his pets, he spent countless hours feeding and tending to the feral cats around his home. He turned his property into a place of sanctuary for them where they would always be warm and fed. Joe is survived by his loving wife Jeanne; two children, Eric and Laura; sisters, Helenea and Maria, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Anna Hrebenak of McKees Rocks, PA, and his sister Anne Hrebenak of Harrisburg, PA. No public services are being held. If desired, donations can be sent to the Salvation Army or Light of Life Rescue Mission. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
