HOFFMAN ALAN F. Of South Fayette, formerly the Mayor of Bethel Park, passed on to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 29, 2017. Born in Elkhart, Indiana, he was only about six months old when Pearl Harbor was bombed, and his parents moved to Ashtabula, Ohio, where his dad went to work in a machine shop to help the war effort. Growing up in Ashtabula, Mr. Hoffman was active in sports, including Little League Baseball where he was noted for throwing three no-hitters as a pitcher. Just before his junior year in high school, his family moved to Columbiana, Ohio. Active in music, primarily piano, he soon began playing in a small dance band, known as the Moonlighters, organized by his father, Joe Hoffman, who played sax and clarinet, with Mr. Hoffman's grandfather playing drums and fiddle for old time square dancing. They played almost every Saturday night somewhere in Eastern Ohio or Western PA for ten years. His brother Brad replaced his grandfather on the drums in the later years. Meanwhile, Mr. Hoffman graduated from Columbiana High School in 1959 and began attending Youngstown State University. He attended one year full time and six years of night school to get his degree in Business, majoring in Accounting. He wed Marlene Lynn O'Neill in 1961, and they had their second child as he graduated YSU. By that time, he was Treasurer of a wholesale distributor in Youngstown. Always drawn to community service, he also served as President of the Youngstown Area Jaycees, President of the Eastern Ohio Citizens Drug Commission, and served on various board of directors including Easter Seal Society, Youngstown Association of Credit Management, Junior Achievement, and others. In 1974, he and his family moved to the Pittsburgh aarea to take a position with a wholesale distributor, and settled in Bethel Park. After a few years with the distributor, he took the position of Controller with Process Combustion Corporation in the area, and worked for them for seven years before starting his own Public Accounting firm in Bethel Park. He grew that firm successfully and operated for over 20 years. Still community minded, he became very active in many organizations. He was a founding member of the Bethel Park Rotary, a board member of the Bethel Park Chamber of Commerce and South Hills Chamber, a founding member of the Bethel Park Community Foundation and an active member of the Bethel Park Republican Committee. He loved golf and played on many courses in the USA as well as other countries. An avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan, he enjoyed going to Pirate games at PNC Park. Also rooted for the Steelers, and for many years, worked on game days for Fox Sports as an extra on their TV crew. He also followed the Pens. He loved studying the Bible, animals, reading, history, traveling, and watching his grandchildren with their many activities. Mr. Hoffman was elected to Bethel Park Council for eight years in the 1980's, and elected Mayor of Bethel Park for four years in the 90's. During his tenure as Mayor, he cast the deciding vote on the budget which enabled recreational development and work was begun on the Community Center, the Milennium Park, and the Bladerunners Ice Rinks. In 2003, the Hoffmans moved to a carriage house in South Fayette, where he continued his community service for a number of years serving on the South Fayette Planning Commission. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Marlene; three children, Jayme (Brett) Rapp, Scott Hoffman and Michelle (Mark) Winterhalter; as well as 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Bradley (Michelle), of Solon, Ohio, and a sister, Nancy (Dr. Warren) Downhour, of Ohio. Alan and Marlene enjoyed traveling to many places in the USA, Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, and recently to Europe. They have also been very active in their church, Calvary Full Gospel Assembly of God in South Fayette. Friends will be received Thursday, May 4, 2017, from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, May 5, 2017, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at PAUL L. HENNEY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 5570 Library Rd., Bethel Park, PA.
