He was a commander, US Navy, Judge Advocate for 26 years combined active duty and reserve service. He served in Afghanistan 2003 and Iraq 2007 with units assigned to investigate and prosecute terrorists. He received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army and Navy Commendation Medals. He worked as Prosecutor, Allegheny County 1990-1997, Assistant Court Administrator 1997-2000, and Magisterial District Judge from 2000 to present in Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair. She was born April 12, 1939, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late George and Anna (Serena) Kyle. Mrs. McGregor was a shift supervisor at Bruce Plastics. She enjoyed Pittsburgh sports and spending time with her grandchildren. POLI MARTHA JOANN OLIVER 91, of Derry, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2013. Born on July 7, 1922 in Derry, Pennsylvania, Martha was the daughter of the late Luigi and Christina Oliver. She grew up in Derry and earned a Bachelors of Science Degree from Seaton Hill College in 1944. She began her teaching career as a science teacher in Easton, Maryland and Braddock, Pennsylvania before touching many lives of hundreds of students in Derry, Pennsylvania during more than thirty years of teaching Home Economics. She retired from teaching in 1986. Martha was a passionate golfer and member of the SILU Ladies League. She was tremendously dedicated to the Derry Area High School musical program, applying her talent to create hundreds of costumes for school musicals, even in her retirement. A dedicated mother, Martha always put her children and grandchildren first, and left them with warm memories of holidays, beach vacations and beautiful handmade clothing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Poli, whom she married in 1949, and passed away in 1961. Her brothers, Frank, Orlando, and Rev. Father Domenic Oliver; sisters, Alice Colaianni, Armea Colaianni and Emma Stypula. She is survived by sisters, Marguerite Connelly and Mary Nussbaum; brother-in-law, Richard Nussbaum; as well as a son, Anthony; and a daughter-in-law, Rosalie Barsoti; son, Henry, II; and daughter-in-law, Jane Lee Mei Ling; daughter, Penny; and son-in-law, Mark Miller; grandchildren, Eric Poli and wife, Beatriz, Jonathan Poli, Dominique Poli, Cristina Poli George and husband, Brian, Megan Miller, Jack Miller, Justin Miller; and great-grandchild, Mikael Poli; several nieces and nephews. BURIK JEROME KEVIN Age 52, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., formerly of Stowe Twp., on Aug., 12, 2012 while vacationing in FL. Beloved son of Claudia "Lusko" and the late Jerome S. Burik. Jerry attended St. Malachy Grade School in Kennedy Twp. and Canevin HS. in Pgh. He then attended WVU later transferring to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston where he entered the Occupational Therapy (O.T.) program. He graduated in 1982 with a BS degree in O.T. In 1991 he completed his Masters Degree of Health Science in O.T. Jerry then went on to co-found the first private practice of O.T. in Charleston, (Therapy Resources), prior to joining the faculty at MUSC. In 1992, through 1996, he was appointed as an Adjunct Instructor in the O.T. program. He then, in 1999, was appointed as a fulltime Assistant Professor and as the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator in the Division of O.T., College of Health Professions (CHP) at MUSC, where he served at the time of his passing. In 2002 Jerry was awarded the MUSC Health Science Foundation Teaching Excellence Award in the Developing Teacher Category. He was nominated for the Educator-Lecturer Award of MUSC Health Sciences Foundation in 2006 and 2009 and nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award from the CHP in 2002, 2003, and 2006. Likewise, he was nominated for the Developing Scholars Award at the CHP in 2005 and 2006. The MUSC, Charleston, S.C. has created an annual Award of Professionalism to be presented in his name to the top student at the university. Jerry's mother, Claudia made the first annual presentation of the award at commencement exercises on July 20, 2013.
