LaVERNE HEAD In her 95th year, LaVerne Head, wife of the late Robert J. Head, Sr., mother of Kathleen Katz, the late Robert J. Head, Jr., Karen Palmer and Richard P. Head (Colleen) made her peaceful transition surrounded by her family. She is survived by eight grandchildren: Eric Katz (Marge), Christopher Katz, Jennifer Dodson (Brian), Timothy Palmer, Kristen Palmer, David Head (Jillian), Kimberly Head, and Jamie Head; four great-grandchildren: Madelaine Katz, Reece Katz, Raina Dodson and Lillian Head; and many nieces and nephews. Daughter of the late Paul and Nellie Patter, she was preceded in death by nine siblings. Her soul entered God's Kingdom, where she will forever reside with Him and all of His Angels and Saints. REV. THOMAS J. BYRNE, C.S.SP. Fr. Thomas Byrne, C.S.Sp. of Bethel Park, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, died peacefully December 5, 2019, at Libermann Hall, Bethel Park, PA. He was 81 years old. Fr. Byrne was born July 14, 1938, in New York City. He professed his vows as a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit on August 22, 1959, at Holy Ghost Novitiate in Ridgefield, CT and was ordained to the Priesthood October 8, 1964, at St. Mary's Seminary, Ferndale in Norwalk, CT. Fr. Byrne was first appointed to Gerard High School, Phoenix, AZ in 1965 for two years and then Notre Dame High School in Riverside, CA until 1970. In succeeding years, he ministered at Immaculate Heart Parish in Lake Charles, LA as well as at Duquesne University as chaplain. In the early 1980s, he worked in San Antonio as part of the formation team and the Oblate School of Theology. In 1985, he moved to Chicago and served in the formation program at the Catholic Theological Union. From 1989-1993, he taught in Houston at St. Mary's Seminary and the University of St. Thomas. He then served as chaplain at the Memorial Herman Hospital from 1993-1995. He was appointed pastor of St. Philip Neri in Houston, TX until 2000, when he became pastor of St. Joseph Church in Conway, AR. In 2007, he went into semi-retirement and was chaplain to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in Houston until his full retirement in 2012. He came to Libermann Hall in Bethel Park, PA and was Archivist as well as leading weekly Scripture classes at the Spiritan Center until 2017. Fr. Byrne was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Sarah Agnes McAward Byrne; and siblings, Patricia, Eileen, Ursula and Donald. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Dallera of Charlotte, NC; nieces, nephews and extended family members. There will be viewing in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel at the Spiritan Center, 6230 Brush Run Road, Bethel Park on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, from 9-10:45 a.m., with the Funeral Mass being celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at a later time at the Calvary Cemetery in Queens, NY. FREDERICK W. GEIB After a very full life, Fred passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2019. In his last hours, he was surrounded by his loving wife of 59 years, Alice Geib, his daughters, Carol Yorkgitis and Susan Persinski, and other members of his family. He is also survived by five grandsons, Matthew Yorkgitis, Brian Persinski, Stephen Yorkgitis, Anthony Persinski, and Patrick Yorkgitis, one great-granddaughter, Evelyn Rose Persinski, and three nephews. He is preceded by his parents Rosa and Louis Geib and his brother John Geib and sister Ann Michaelis. He and Alice lived in their Bridgeville home since 1963 after marrying in 1960. Fred always had a good story to tell, an ear for the latest news of a friend or family member, and practical words of advice and assistance. He loved to garden, make wine with friends, grill for family meals, watch birds, manufacture and share bubble wands with adults and children alike, teach or play a game of cards or dominoes, and travel. Born June 2, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Fred honorably served his country in Korea and Japan as a member of the Air Force from 1953-1957, achieving the rank of sergeant. He had a long career as a structural draftsman for Obenchain Corp., Deci Corporation, and other companies, retiring in 1995. SISTER MARIALEIN ANZENBERGER Dominican Sister of Peace, Sister Marialein Anzenberger died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH on Saturday, December 7, 2019. She was born in 1924 in Altoona, PA and in 1945 entered the congregation of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Sr. Marialein earned degrees from the College of St. Mary of the Springs (now Ohio Dominican University), a MS in Business Education from Hunter College and a MS in Pastoral Counseling from Iona College. She began her ministry as a teacher and administrator in elementary and secondary schools in Connecticut, Illinois, New York and Ohio. She served at the Marriage Tribunals in Providence, RI and Columbus, OH, and as a Counselor at St. Therese's Shrine in Columbus, OH from 1993-2000. She then ministered in the Office of Human Resources for the St. Mary of the Springs Congregation. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Josephine Lord Anzenberger; her sister, Katherine Holmes; and her brothers, Anthony, Frank and Joseph Anzenberger. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A Vigil of Remembrance Service will be held on Thursday, December 12, 4:45 p.m. at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel, Columbus, OH with the wake continuing until 7:00 p.m. The funeral liturgy will be held at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel on Friday, December 13, 9:00 a.m. followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery by EGAN-RYAN FUNERAL HOME. Denny will be remembered fondly by the many friends he worked and volunteered with throughout his lifetime. A registered master plumber, he spent his career at Allegheny County until his retirement. Denny was also a volunteer firefighter at Option Volunteer Fire Department and Baldwin No. 1 Fire Department where he was a lifetime member. For 12 years, he served as a council member of Baldwin Borough. He was also a longtime member of the Allegheny County Borough's Association, where he served as president and director, and was named its Man of the Year, 1993. SHIRLEY E. JOHNSTON Age 90, of Penn Hills, on Sunday, December 8, 2019. Beloved wife of the late James J. Johnston, Jr. Mother of Jill (Ron) Rotolo, Jeffrey Johnston, and the late Jay T. Johnston; Aunt of Douglas (Sharon) Storch and Tom Storch; preceded in death by parents, Thomas and Nellie Elliott and sister, Marjorie (Champ) Storch. Shirley was beacon of the Penn Hills Community. Her dedication to service and her faith lead her to serve in many ministries both in and out of her church. She worked as a teacher for the Penn Hills School District for 28 years and over 65 years at the Sunday School in Hebron United Presbyterian Church touching the lives of countless children. She and her husband were devoted to serving and participating in the community and they did so together. Her activities included serving as President of Penn Hills Garden Club. A passionate antique doll collector, Shirley was known far and wide to those who cherished the sweet faces of dolls rich in history. A loving and faithful woman, Shirley will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
