MARY EILEEN (CAHILL) BATES Age 90, of McCandless Township, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2019. Eileen was born April 26, 1929 in Pittsburgh and married to John W. Bates, Jr. since August 12, 1954. She earned her B.S. at Mt. Mercy (Carlow) College and her Master's degree from University of Pittsburgh. Eileen taught at the City of Pittsburgh Schools for five years and then taught fifth grade at Poff Elementary School in Hampton School District for 33 years, retiring in 1995. Eileen was an active member of St. Ursula Church and especially involved with the Parish festival. She is survived by her husband, John W. Bates, Jr.; son, John William "Bill" Bates; daughter, Marianne (Joseph) T. Laity; grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Lauren and Kevin Qoyawayma; two sisters, Elizabeth (Ron) Shannon and Eleanor (Leo) Cox. She was preceded in death her parents, John W. and Agnes (Laffey) Cahill and by her brother, Jack Cahill. FREDERICK JOHN BISSERT Age 95, of Pittsburgh, died on September 1, 2019. Born on July 26, 1924 to the late Katherine and Jacob Bissert. He is survived by his second wife, Patricia (Wheeler Forgey) Bissert; children, Elizabeth (William) Matthew, Christine Bissert; David (Kimberly) Bissert and Timothy (Lori) Bissert; son-in-law, Thomas Fischer; stepchildren, David Forgey and Deborah Dominguez; grandchildren, Jonathan and Jason Matthew; Peter (Ashley) Bissert; Kathryn (fiancé Travis Taylor) Bissert, Kelsie Bissert, Matthew (Celena) Bissert; step-grandchildren, Amanda (Eston) Walden, Rebecca (Corey) Knight; and step-great-grandchildren, Mya and Landyn Knight and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine (King) Bissert; daughter, Suzan Fischer and sister, Elizabeth (Shell) Rodgers. Fred earned the Purple Heart in November 1944 while serving under General Patton's 3rd Army, 95th Infantry Division in WWII. He was one of the brave soldiers who fought in the Metz campaign and were later referred to as the Iron Men of Metz. During retirement, Fred was always willing to speak at local schools when asked to visit classrooms and share his experiences as a veteran. He even created a pictorial journal of his time as a WWII veteran to share with students. He attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA as a member of the Army Specialized Training Program in WWII, and after discharge in 1945 attended the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon) in Pittsburgh, PA, and was a member of the Honorary Engineering Society Tau Bei TI Association, Gamma of PA. Fred earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. Fred worked for Duquesne Light Company for almost 40 years with multiple positions including the job of Superintendent of the first nuclear power plant in Shippingport, PA. In addition, Fred served as a member of the PA Advisory Committee Atomic Energy from 1968 – 1974 which acted as advisors to the Governor of PA. Fred served extensively in the Christian community, lay preaching in many Christian churches and staying active in his retirement years researching prophetic biblical teachings and publishing two books. He was a Sunday School Teacher for many years at Pittsburgh Baptist Church and hosted a Bible Study group in his home. ROBERT "BOB" FRANCIS SCHNEIDER Age 93, of Pittsburgh, PA, died on September 3, 2019. Bob was born to Ralph and Anna Schneider in Bellevue, PA in 1926 and he graduated from Bellevue High School. In 1953, he married Nancy (Lamneck) Schneider. He was a carpenter and tireless worker throughout his life. Bob was a US Army veteran of World War II. As a coach and President of Brad-Mar-Pine little league baseball, he secured the land and built Braisley Field in Wexford. Bob loved playing golf with his family and friends at North Park for more than 50 years. He also enjoyed playing cards and caring for his yard and garden. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Nancy, and their four children, Robert Schneider and wife, Marcia, of Loveland, CO, Susan Limberiou and husband, George, of Pittsburgh, PA, Jeffrey Schneider of Atlanta, GA, and Steven Schneider and wife, Anne, of Manhasset, NY. He was also very proud of his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the GEORGE A. DIANA K. HORBIAK Age 94, of Alexandria, Virginia passed away peacefully on August 28, 2019, with her family by her side. Born February 9, 1925 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Joseph and Helen Malovich. Diana spent the majority of her life in Pittsburgh. She was very proud of the fact that she was a Pittsburgher and always said her best memories were with her family and friends that reside there. Diana is survived by her children, Pat and Jay Jones and Joan Horbiak and Philip Rogers; sister, Vivian Harms and family and a host of beloved friends and family. She is preceded in death by her parents. Since the age of nine, Diana loved writing poetry and often her poems were published in local publications. Diana was also a medical transcriptionist for Allegheny General Hospital. She was a dedicated mother first and foremost. Diana treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. As her health declined, she was never alone. Her daughters stayed faithfully by her side. Diana was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. Diana will have a private funeral for immediate family and friends. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last days. For those who have known Diana, her graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 12 p.m. at Mount Royal Memorial Park in Glenshaw, PA. JOSEPH "JOE" CHARLES FUCCI Died at home on Thursday, September 5, 2019 after a battle with cancer. He was born on June 26, 1936 in Meadville, PA a son of the late Joseph and Louise (Euliano) Fucci. Joe truly lived a full life. Growing up, he was an all-around athlete, playing football, basketball, and track. Joe was the running back for his high school team when Evelyn, a cheerleader, caught his eye. By 1956, they had married and moved to Pittsburgh, PA, and began to grow their family. He worked for Schindler Elevators for over 30 years. When he wasn't spending time with his family, Joe could be found at the golf course or Kennedy Lanes Bowling Alley, where he famously bowled a 300 in 2002. Joe loved to play card games such as Gin-Rummy with his siblings and War with his grandchildren, though he seldom played by the rules. Those who knew him best could expect to bicker and argue over whose rules they were playing by, but always ended the games laughing. Joe attended St. Malachy Catholic Church. He was best known for his ability to love fiercely, welcome everyone like family, and to find the joy in everything. Joe touched many throughout his life, and left behind countless wonderful memories in his passing. Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn (Budjan) Fucci; four children, Lynnette (Nick) Cercone of Moon, PA, Joseph (JaneAnn) Fucci of Chippewa, PA, Sandra (Paul) Taubeneck of Parma, OH, Melissa (Jim) Vedder of Oak Hill, VA; nine grandchildren, Brandon (Terri) Cercone, Sean Cercone, Aura Fucci, Joseph Fucci, II, Jacob Taubeneck, Lauren Taubeneck, Matthew Taubeneck, Oliva Vedder, Mitchell Vedder; two great-grandchildren, Heidi Sipos, Kylie Cercone; siblings, Carmella, Dom, Neil, Jimmy, Mary and Joann. HENRY W. "HANK" HUNZIKER Age 66, of Bethel Park, on Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Beloved husband for 43 years of Rosanne D. Minich; brother of Ronald J. (Wendy) Hunziker and the late Robert P. Hunziker; also survived by nieces and nephews. Hank had previously managed a Ritz Camera store and became a district manager of Lesley Threshold Typewriter. For the last three decades he owned and operated Oakland Typewriter and Office Supply. Hank was a car enthusiast who enjoyed working on and repairing them himself. MARGARET T. "PEGGY" O'DONOGHUE Age 81, of Cranberry Twp., passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 while under the care of Good Samaritan Hospice in Wexford. Born November 20, 1937 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late John F. Linehan and Mary K. (Naughton) Linehan. Margaret was a beloved Mother and Nana to her seven children, 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, always supporting them in every aspect of their lives and instilling in them a love and respect for their Irish heritage. She was employed as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital, UPMC Passavant Hospital and Kane Regional Center in North Hills. For thirty years, she and her husband, Tom, owned and operated the Blarney Stone, a landmark Pittsburgh restaurant. Margaret was a faithful member of St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, where she attended mass daily. Margaret loved to travel all over the country and enjoyed going to Disney with her family. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. LOIS R. ALLEN Of Wilkins Twp., formerly of Edgewood and McKeesport, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, daughter of the late Ira Dayton and Mae Somers Allen. Born in McKeesport in 1927, she graduated from McKeesport High School on D-Day, June 6, 1944. She graduated from Slippery Rock State Teacher's College (now Slippery Rock University) with majors in mathematics and English and a consuming love for playing tennis. She received an M.Ed. from Duke University. Miss Allen taught mathematics in public schools in Penn Hills, Edgewood, and at Langley High School. For 40 years, she taught mathematics at the Allegheny Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County, where she considered her greatest reward was in helping non-math students to understand, master, and appreciate mathematics. In 2008, she wrote her memoirs of McKeesport, "All We Really Needed-Growing up in a PA Steel Town During the Great Depression". She was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Laura E. Bowers and Anna Mae Allen and brother, Ira Dayton Allen, Jr. She is survived by her nephew, John W. Bowers; sister-in-law, Lorna Moag Allen; nieces, Lisa Plata, Lois Jean Lane and Susan Sciullo, Lorna Montgomery; nephews, Blaine Allen, Scott Seiler, John Bowers, Jr., Darin Bowers, and best friends, Vicki Gizzi Beynon, and the late Ann Ribar Nieser, Mary Jane Carrera McGowan, and Helen Layne. THOMAS JAY "TOMMY" KEOGH Tommy was born on March 19, 1970, in Yokohama, Japan and died on September 3, 2019, in Regent Square, Pittsburgh after a two year battle with colon cancer. He is survived by his parents, Ann and Tom Keogh of Scott Township; his sister, Molly Bennett, her husband Mike, their children, Miles and Maggie, and his cat, Mr. Bones. His practice of going to the shelter and adopting the oldest cat is just one example of his sweet and caring nature. A life filled with twists and turns gave him a unique view of the world and an appreciation for the underdog. His generous heart, kind soul and problem solving skills shone through wherever he was and in whatever he was pursuing. From Pittsurgh to Australia to Japan to Rhode Island to Phoenix and back to Pittsburgh again he planted roots and built relationships wherever he went. He will be greatly missed by many. His kind heart was not just for his friends and family but for all, including his caregivers. Every visit to Hillman Cancer Center and Shadyside Hospital was a reunion and check-in with the nurses and doctors. ORELIO S. "ROLLO" VECCHIO A lifelong resident of Pitcairn, age 81, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 4, 2019. Rollo was born on January 8, 1938, a son of the late Francesco and Maria (Manfredi) Vecchio; beloved husband of MaryAnn (Yanuzzo) Vecchio for 53 years; precious father of Frank (Debbie) Vecchio of Pitcairn and Carmen (Nina) Vecchio of Monroeville; treasured grandfather of Natalie and Angelina Vecchio; brother of Elvira (late Stanley) Drzewinski of NJ, Rose (Louis) Mediate of Export, Erminia Vecchio and Louis Vecchio, both of Pitcairn and the late Ortenzo "Art" (surviving spouse, Evelyn) Vecchio of FL. Rollo was a proud veteran of the Air Force Reserves. He was a political and social advocate for the community of Pitcairn, the Turtle Creek Valley and Allegheny County. Long before politics and being a community activist and achiever, Rollo, as a youth was a shoe shine boy in Pitcairn. He later landed a job at The Star Market in Pitcairn (now Joe's Butcher Shop) and that propelled him to a career in the grocery business. After working for Loblaw's, and for 15 years with Giant Eagle, Rollo switched careers at age 50 to become a Revenue Agent for the PA Dept. of Revenue from where he retired in 2009. But he never retired from politics, his volunteerism, or his passion for Pitcairn. For Pitcairn, Rollo was a councilman for 36 years, serving as President for much of that time. In addition to his political post as councilman, he was a volunteer of the Pitcairn Parks and Recreation Committee and coordinator of Pitcairn Community Days. Other organizations where he was a member or volunteered in Pitcairn include, the American Legion, Lions Club, Italian Club, Fire Company #2 Social Club, the Pitcairn Civic Association, Camp B and St. Michael Church. Rollo also was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Rankin Christian Center where he served on the Board as Treasurer. Rollo was a member and two-time President of the Allegheny County Boroughs Association. For over 50 years, he has been an active member of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee, serving as Chairman for 48 years. His active community involvement reached beyond Pitcairn as he was an alternate delegate to the Turtle Creek Council of Governments, and he was a board member and Treasurer of six senior housing corporations. Rollo was a member of the Allegheny County Vision Committee, and honorary member of the Allegheny County Sheriff's Association and a member of the PA State Sheriff's Association. Rollo's accomplishments and endeavors through is political career, immensely benefited his beloved Pitcairn. Parks, properties, paving projects and police benefited. Fire departments and ball fields benefited. Organizations and Associations benefited. All benefited from the passion and love that Rollo possessed and shared for people. Friends are welcome on Saturday and Sunday from 2-8 p.m. at PATRICK T. BEVERLY C. (GROVES) KOZAK Age 69, of Bridgeville, peacefully passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2019, with her daughter by her side. Loving mother of Ginger (Bob) Helsel, Sherry (Scott) Donvan and Wendy Groves; caring sister of Sandy Olson, Daniel Thomson, Sandy Bradley, Richard Reiger, Kandy Conner, and Randy Thomson. Beverly is also survived by many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Eugena Thomson.
