JAMES RAYMOND DUFFY Age 87, of Columbus, Ohio, died August 25, 2019, after a brief illness following heart surgery. Born on January 21st, 1932, in Braddock, Pennsylvania, “Jim” Duffy, was the youngest child of Raymond and Bertha Duffy. Jim married the love of his life, Collette Mullen of Clairton, Pennsylvania, in 1957. He was preceded in death by siblings Virgil Duffy Sweet, Regis Duffy, Aniceta Duffy Heidenreich, and John “Jack” Duffy; and infant daughter Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 61 years, Collette, children Michael (Mary Elizabeth Palmer) and Meghan (Charles L. Coulson), and sister Mary Adelle Duffy. A loving father and grandfather, he is also survived by six grandchildren, Patrica Duffy, Shannon Coulson, James Duffy, Conor Coulson, Katherine Duffy, and Raymond Duffy. Following graduation from Duquesne University in 1953, Jim joined the armed services, enlisting in the Air Force where he served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return, Jim worked as a Claims Adjuster for Traveller's Insurance. Jim attended Duquesne University Law School and was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1963. He practiced trial law in Pittsburgh and served as Solicitor for the Borough of Whitehall until his retirement in 2005. He later relocated with Collette to Columbus in 2014. The consummate gentleman, Jim's charm and easy laugh will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 7 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Pleasant Hills. GLORIA E. MURTHA Age 93 of West Mifflin, died Thursday, August 29, 2019. She was born in Mount Clare, PA on November 4, 1925, the daughter of the late Norman G. and Leona B. Miller Schankel. Gloria enjoyed knitting, crocheting, word puzzles, bowling, and in her youth, she was an outstanding swimmer and diver. She loved to color so much that she started a coloring club at Locust Grove Personal Care. Gloria was a member of the USO and was also a World War II Coast Watcher. She was a Eucharistic Minister, taught CCD, and was a premarital counselor. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, John F. Murtha, age 98; sons, John M. (Mary Ann) Murtha of Chambersburg, PA, Richard J. (Pamela) Murtha of Evans, GA, Mark D. (Katherine) Murtha of Clinton, PA, David T. (Debbie) Murtha of Avon, NY, and Kenneth L. (Debbie) Murtha of Worcester, PA; daughter, Eileen L. Murtha of West Mifflin; grandchildren, Bethany R. Murtha, Evan M. Murtha, Kelley A. Murtha, Allison L. Murtha, Bradley A. (Jamie) Murtha, Jeffrey K. (Tara) Murtha, Matthew C. (Maddy) Murtha; great-grandchild, Carson K. Murtha. CHARLES E. SEELBAUGH Age 71, of Middlesex, on August 28, 2019. Chuck worked at Glenshaw Glass for 33 years. He was a very hard worker and always supported his beloved family. Chuck proudly served our country with the US Army, participating in two tours in Vietnam. He loved volunteering at Meals on Wheels and at Holy Sepulcher Church. In his retirement, Chuck was also an avid arrowhead collector, spending hours combing freshly churned fields in search of his next gem. Chuck was the beloved husband for 46 years of Delores O. (Geibel) Seelbaugh; the loving father of Chuck M. (Amy) Seelbaugh and Joe (Erin) Seelbaugh; the brother of Donald (Paula) Stair; cherished grandfather of Derek, Ashley, Mayes and Emmy Seelbaugh. Chuck was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Marcheck and a sister, Barbara Seelbaugh. THOMAS S. MANNS Age 86, of West Mifflin, passed away on August 28, 2019 at home. Son of the late Joseph H. and Veronica (Denne) Manns, he was the last owner of Manns Bros. Grocery in Duquesne from 1978-1995. He was a member of Holy Angels Church in Hays and their Social Committee. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to Esther B. (Kozar) Manns; father of Thomas G. (Jennifer) Manns of West Mifflin and Matthew S. Manns of West Mifflin; grandfather of Rebecca, Bethany and Stella Manns. He was predeceased by brothers and sisters Lawrence (late Ann) Manns, Norbert (late Martha) Manns, Regis (late Ann) Manns, Joseph (late Emma) Manns, Howard (late Mary Ann) Manns, Mildred Manns, Gertrude (late Bert) Kovalsky, Susan (late Charles “Jake”) Barnes. JANET J. KEENAN Age 76, of Kennedy Township passed peacefully on August 28, 2019. Janet was born September 19, 1942 to Warren and Jewel (Kocsuta) Smith in McKees Rocks. She was the youngest of five loving siblings, survived by Everett (Rita)/ Roger (Carole) and joins Lois (Roy) Anderson/William (Barbara). Janet was a McKees Rocks High School class of 1960 graduate and married her high school sweetheart Arthur J. Keenan who she shared 53 years of marriage with prior to his passing in 2015. Janet's strongest quality was being a loving mother to Shari (John) Ramirez, Lori (Wayne) Pintar and Kelli (Brian) Priddy and cherished MeMe to Ashley, Alex, Austin, Ryan, Adam, Phillip, Sean, Celena and Danny. She extended her endearing virtues and became the companion and caregiver to many beloved sister/brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors and we are eternally grateful for their support during her time of need. All who knew her benefitted from her generosity with her time, smile and laughter, her great shopping ability and talent for cooking and throwing a party. MeMe taught us that every day should be “Christmas” by giving to others and celebrating life with those who you love. DANIEL BYRON HOLOWATY Formerly of Carnegie, passed away on August 28, 2019. Born November 21, 1920, Dan belonged to The Greatest Generation, having served in the United States Army in Europe during WWII. Dan was preceded in death by his wife Anthonia Holowaty, parents John and Anna Holowaty, sister Anna Holowaty, and brother Michael Holowaty. He is survived by his son Thomas Holowaty and wife Susan of Ligonier, three grandchildren and their spouses Jill (Jason) Wallin, Melanie (Jason) Schmidt, and Timothy (Stephanie) Holowaty. He was blessed with six great-grandchildren who he appreciated visiting with immensely and with whom he shared a kindred curious and mischievous spirit. Dan enjoyed an active life well into his nineties golfing and socializing at the local senior center. He was known to love dancing; when his grandchildren were young, he would tell them, “I'll dance at your wedding,” and he did! Family and friends will be received at VLADIMIR S. JOHN BIEDRZYCKI Of Robinson Township, peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2019 surrounded by family, after a brief battle with heart disease. Preceded in death by his father, John A. Biedrzycki; mother, Amelia "Millie" Biedrzycki-Cercone; and brother, David B. Cercone, Esq. Survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Bette Jean (Kinneman) Biedrzycki; son, John A. Biedrzycki, Esq. (Beth); sister, Michele Cercone; brother, Paul Biedrzycki; beloved grandchildren, Max and Molly. John began his career in the U.S. Army, serving from 1967-1970 in Korea as a Pay Distribution Specialist with the 7th Infantry Division. Thereafter, working as a laborer by day and going to night school, he earned his Masters in Education from the University of Pittsburgh and began working for the Pittsburgh Public Schools. John taught Social Studies, American Democracy and was the director the teaching academy at Langley High School. He was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship in 1989, which led to three months of study in Sierra Leone and The Gambia to develop an African Studies curriculum for his students. In addition to teaching, John was the assistant baseball coach for Langley's 1982 State Championship and head coach for back to back City Championships in 1997 and 1998. Since 1969, John had been an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), holding various local and state leadership positions as an advocate for veterans, their families and active duty military. Upon his retirement from teaching in 2005, John devoted all of his free time to the VFW, While his accomplishments within the VFW were numerous, most notably he served as the Commander of the Department of Pennsylvania from 2002-2003 and achieved All American status. Thereafter he served on numerous national VFW committees advocating to the legislature and Veterans Administration to improve conditions for active duty service members and their families, as well as those in the VA health system, John was unanimously elected National Commander in Chief at the 2015 VFW convention held in Pittsburgh. Following his election, John traveled all over the United States and to numerous foreign countries to observe the working conditions and treatment of our active duty and wounded soldiers, During his travels in Asia, he visited remote sites where the missing remains of our fallen were being sought out and recovered. Armed with firsthand knowledge of what he observed, John zealously advocated on behalf of active duty soldiers, veterans and those missing in action, through testimony before Congress and Oval Office meetings with President Obama. Following the expiration of his term of office as Commander in Chief, John continued to travel the country in support of veterans causes until he was physically unable to travel. Family and friends received Monday and Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the SCHEPNER-McDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, INC., 165 Noble Avenue, Crafton where the blessing service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. CHARLOTTE "COOKIE" RAUSCHER Of Bethel Park, at home on Friday, August 30, 2019, age 76. The story of Cookie starts on March 20, 1942, to the late Michael and Charlotte Chockla of Clairton. She has an older sister, Patricia Hassenplug (Gordon) and a younger brother, Michael Chockla (Janice). After high school, she met her soul mate, Francis Rauscher. Married for 57 years, their love never waned. Holding hands and kissing like teenagers to the end. They have one daughter, Kristen Stubenraugh. Kristen and her husband, Richard have two children, Michael Zeiler, Jr. and Jacquelyn Stubenraugh. Cookie devoted her life to God. She worked for years at St. Paul's Retreat Center. She even made a journey to the holy lands. Cookie appreciated art and was a wonderful painter. Her legacy is the love she gave to those she met and the willingness to also help those in need. She will be missed by her sister-in-law, Ann Mercurio and her many nieces and nephews. She left this world surrounded by her family. SAMUEL C. GUERRERA, SR. Of Ross Twp., on Friday, August 30, 2019. Born in Ellwood City, PA on July 13, 1927, son of the late Paolo and Filomena (Condello) Guerrera. Beloved husband of Carol J. (Degenhardt) Guerrera; loving father of Paulette A. (Nick) Conti and Samuel C. (Carole) Guerrera; brother of Margaret (John) Kimmel, and the late Josephine (surviving Charles) Bucker and Tony (surviving Rena) Guerrera; brother-in-law of Diane (Chuck) Singer and Robert Degenhardt; also survived by many nieces and nephews and grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
