CHARLOTTE E. HICKMAN Age 93, of Monroeville, on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Jonathan Hickman; loving mother of Suzanne Squeglia (Nick), Carolyn Hickman and Janet Trafficante (Michael); grandmother of Anthony Squeglia, Shari Murphy, Ryan Frantz, Jonathan Frantz, Larry Trafficante, Jill Long, and Michael Trafficante; great-grandmother of Nicolas, Sara and Sofia Squeglia, Jacob and Hailey Frantz, Jaxson Frantz, Calin and Connor Murphy, Leah and Emma Trafficante. Charlotte trained and was a nurse at Columbia Hospital. Upon the birth of her children she was a stay at home mom. Today we celebrate Charlotte's life. She was a woman who was devoted to her daughters. Strong yet gentle, self-sacrificing, she made us feel safe and secure. She taught us to live by the golden rule and she demanded we always be there for each other. She loved the piano and to sing and dance. For many years she was a member of the church choir. Her laughter was legendary as was her whistle to call us home for dinner, we heard it no matter how far away we were and responded like Pavlov's dogs. She had an adventurous side, in her sixties she was still riding rides at Kennywood (remember the Round-Up). In her seventies, she hopped on her grandson's motorcycle and took a ride. With her quiet time she loved to read and crochet, every family member has one of her blankets. She wasn't just our mother she was our best friend. She always saw the silver lining and she has and always will be the wind beneath our wings. Friends will be received Saturday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the GENE H. CORL INC. FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATION SERVICES OF MONROEVILLE, 4335 Northern Pike (412-372-2100). A service will follow visitation at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, as Charlotte loved children. Pete was a loving, hard-working, and dedicated father, brother, Pappou, and friend. He was sarcastic and at times gruff but was a big Teddy Bear at heart. He loved his grandchildren more than anything and getting to spend time with them. Pete spent a lifetime in service not only to his family but also to the community as well. In his younger years, in Greece, he flew planes in the Air Force and for many years was the private pilot to the King of Greece. After he came to America, he began working alongside his brother, Dimitri, as a waiter, at the Red Carpet, the Colony, and, for 30 years prior to his retirement, at the LeMont. Never to be one to sit idle, Pete often worked two jobs to support his family. He worked in the fleet service at US Airways, loading luggage into planes and, most recently, he enjoyed working through his retirement as a crossing guard for the community of Crafton. Beyond physically giving of himself, he regularly gave to his favorite charities: St. Jude Children's Hospital and to the Disabled Veterans of America. When he wasn't working, he could be found having coffee with his friends and Greek buddies at South Hills Village or Dunkin Donuts. He loved WWE wrestling and would often watch it with his grandsons most nights of the week. He also enjoyed listening to Elvis and watching cowboy and classic movies. Visitation will be Sunday, May 12, 2019, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, (412) 563-2800) 1650 Green Tree Rd., Scott Twp., 15220, with a Trisagion Service Sunday, at 7 p.m. Funeral will be held at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 123 Gilkeson Rd., Pgh., PA 15228, on Monday at 11 a.m., with visitation at the church beforehand at 10 a.m. Prayer service, prior to burial, will be held at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children's Hospital or the Disabled Veterans of America. Love and miss you Daddy! www.slaterfuneral.com. ELEANOR BLOOM SIMPSON Ellie passed away after a short illness on May 1, 2019. She was born on November 22, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Christine Moyer and Frederick Stuart Bloom. Ellie attended Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh and the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York before going on to Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, where she received a degree in chemistry. It was during this time, on one of her many trips to New York City, that she met and fell in love with her future husband, John McClelland Simpson, calling him out from the men's bar in Penn Station. Even then she was the spunky woman we all knew and loved. John and Ellie were married on August 22, 1952, at Mt. Lebanon Presbyterian Church. They lived in Mt. Lebanon for nearly 50 years where they raised three daughters Chris, Susan and Debbie. Ellie was a devout Christian and very active in Bower Hill Community Church, Southminster Church and Pinnacle Presbyterian Church. It was while at Southminster that she took on the role first of wedding coordinator and later administrator in a new religious endeavor, Desert Ministries. In 1964, Ellie and John began traveling regularly to Arizona. Where some saw a sandy, dusty desert, Ellie saw beauty in the cacti and wildflowers. She fell in love with the desert, and she and John would ultimately call Arizona their home in retirement. Ellie had many talents, including cooking, needlepoint, and bridge, but the passion her family recalls most was that for her beautiful gardens. Ellie was preceded in death by her husband John. She is survived by three daughters: Chris O'Connor (Bryan) of Venice, Florida; Susan Ely (Ty) of Washington, DC, and Debbie Jarson (Scott) of Paradise Valley, Arizona, her sister, Nancy Johns (Jim) of Pittsburgh PA and her loving friend Don Schwalm. Also by nine grandchildren: Sara O'Connor, Kate Waltemire (Rick), John O'Connor (Marie), Christy Tiboris (Pete), Laura Seals (George), Chelsea Batra (Taresh), Alice Ely, Alex Jarson (Erica), and Andrew Jarson; and 13 great-grandchildren: Jackson O'Connor, Finnley O'Connor, Caden O'Connor, Eleanor Waltemire, Amelia Waltemire, Dessa Tiboris, Ernie Tiboris, Susana Tiboris, George Seals, Tyler Seals, Mae Seals, Walter Seals, and Anya Batra. Her children, grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren were most precious to her. She hoped they knew how very loved they were; never forgetting that even the least among us are worthy. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellie's name may be made to: Pinnacle Presbyterian Church 25150 North Pima Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85255 or Sagewood Residents' Scholarship Foundation. A Memorial Service is planned for June 15, 2019, in Phoenix. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
