FARGOTSTEIN RUTH (GANZ) On Saturday, December 15, 2018. Beloved wife of the late Milton Goldstein, Ralph Ganz and William Fargotstein; loving mother of Karen H. Valeri (Robert Schupfer); cherished sister of Marion Wein, the late Joseph, Martin, and Saul Mandel; grandmother of Jennifer Zerby and Anthony Valeri; great- grandmother of Joshua McMunn and Alexis McMunn. Ruth is survived by Cyd and Norm Josephy; and the entire extended Fargotstein and Goldberg families ; treasured aunt of Marilyn Feldman, Steve and Joe Blattner, Eileen Sposato, Jeffrey and Joel Mandel; also survived by Shelly and Donna Rosen, many cousins, extended family and dear friends. Ruth was involved with numerous Jewish organizations throughout Pittsburgh . She was a longstanding member of Congregation Beth Shalom, where she was an Honorary President. She was an active and devoted volunteer for the Western Pennsylvania Auxiliary for Exceptional People for the past 25 years. NAGY JOSEPH It is with deepest sorrow the family of Joseph Nagy announces his passing, on December 15, 2018. Joe passed, surrounded by family, after a fearless and courageous battle with cancer. Joe lived an incredible 88 years. He was born and raised in Hazelwood, and was one of thirteen. Joe was a “Hazelwood Boy”, a title for which he was incredibly proud. Joe was a strong person both physically and mentally. He would always make his family and friends smile with his favorite jokes. With great pride, Joe served his country in the Army during the Korean War. Joe was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and never gave up on them, win or lose. He loved sharing stories of sneaking into Forbes Field, and climbing trees in Schenley Park to watch them play. Joe was an avid and exceptional golfer -we have the scorecards from across the country to prove it! He was also a top-notch bowler, which was where he met the love of his life, his most beautiful girl in the world, Donna McDonough. Joe and Donna married on August 25, 1972. After marrying Donna, they moved to West Mif?in where they raised three children. The proud “Upa” of Edward (Lisa) Thomas III, Kimberly (Tony) Brown, and Dawna Thomas. Joe was a beloved grandfather, “Poppy” to Zachary Ruf?ng, Nicholas (Nina) Ruf?ng, and Kaitlin Thomas; and a loving great- grandfather to Rylee Ruf?ng. He leaves behind a brother, George; as well as countless nephews, nieces, neighbors, and friends. Born i n L a t r o b e , g r a d u a t e of Greensburg Central Catholic High ‘72 and West Penn School of Nursing in ‘75. Maureen was an enthusiastic Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Surviving Maureen are her sisters Janet Novotny of Nashua, NH and Lainie Addessi of Erie, PA, a sister- in-law Carol Blair of Sagamore Hills, OH, and a cousin Colleen (Jeff) Zbezinski and their children Thomas and Va l e r i e o f G i b s o n i a . Frederick L. Cain, Edward J. Cain, Mary Jo O'Rourke (Ray), Robert F. Cain (Carol), Bernard V. Cain (Jayne), Ellen T. Schollaert (William), Patrick R. Cain (Amy), Michael J. STEWART JEFFREY WARREN Age 70, passed away surrounded by his family on December 15, 2018. Born and raised in Moon Township, PA, Jeffrey was the son of Robert and Dorothy (Heer) Stewart. He proudly served in the US Army as a Specialist 5 from 1968-1970 during the Vietnam War. He spent the majority of his career as a surgical technician at West Penn Hospital. While he always found happiness in his work and with his many friends, the most profound joy of his life was found through his two daughters, Mairead and Sean. Whether he was relaxing on the shores of the Outer Banks, dealing a winning hand of cards, sharing a cold beer and a deep conversation, telling a “Dad joke,” or simply going out for pancakes and eggs -- Jeff was always happiest when he was with his girls. In addition to his daughters, Jeff is also survived by his sisters, Nancy (Dale) Gregoritch, Lee Ann Plish, Laurie Stif?er; brothers, Donald Stewart, Alan (Mary Anne) Stewart; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Robert Neil Stewart. His kind eyes, warm smile, gentle nature, and wicked sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him, because to know him was to instantly love him. SILAY CAROLYN AVOLIO Age 69, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on December 15, 2018 after a hard fought and courageous battle against cancer. Carolyn was born in Pittsburgh on November 7, 1949. She graduated from Hampton High School in 1967, and went on to receive her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1971. Carolyn worked for the North Hills School District for 35 years, spending the majority of her career as a ?fth grade teacher at Seville Elementary, and is proudly listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. She enjoyed an active life playing tennis, driving fast cars, and shopping. She was an exceptionally creative artist, loved to entertain, and was a natural musician. She was a devoted wife, mother, nana, sister, niece, and friend. She was passionate about her family, her friends, her faith, and thought of others before herself. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Teresa Avolio; and is survived by her husband of 12 years, Ken Silay; daughter, Lauren Warner (Benjamin); daughter, Allison Marshall (Virgil); grandson, Landon; granddaughter, Peyton; sister, Gloria Avolio; maternal aunt, Gloria Gugliotta; paternal aunt, Ernestine Vannicola; mother- in-law, Rosemary Silay; stepdaughter, Stephanie Yannotti (Clark); and grandchildren, Julia, Drew, and Grant; and stepson, Matthew Silay (Kate); and grandchildren, Lily and Cooper; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Born February 24, 1930 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Adam and Anna Blanche (Auld) Durst. Paul was a Letter Carrier with the US Postal Service for 30 years. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He enjoyed travelling and camping. He was a Army Veteran Specialist Third Class. He received a Good Conduct Metal and Army of Occupational Metals. He is survived by his wife, Joann (Hathhorn) Durst, of Allison Park, PA whom he married December 28, 1953; son, Richard P. Durst (Cindi); daughter, Patricia J. Lennex (Vernon); grandchildren, RJ, Courtney, Cheyenne, Robert, Chelsea, Christopher, Rylan; great-grandchildren, Raiden And Jayden. HACKETT CAROLE RUTH (RHOADS) Age 92, of West Deer Township, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2018. Born December 28, 1925 in Huntington, New York, she was the daughter of the late Eugene Saylor and Thora (Aulie) Rhoads. She married James C. Hackett, Jr. on June 29, 1946 in Floral Park, New York. Carole's children were the center of her life. She also enjoyed tole painting, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, gardening and shopping. She is survived by her children, Douglas C. Hackett, of Wheeling, WV; Kathleen E. (Leonard) Martin, of Gibsonia; Brian J. Hackett, of Allison Park and Michael S. (Jill) Hackett, of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Cortney L. Maresh, age 67 of Bellevue, husband of Theresa (Novokoski) Maresh; father of Tracy (John) Putz and Charlene Maresh; grandfather of Nick , Nathin, Abby, Maxwell and the late Alix; brother of Maria Wiegand; longtime dear friend of William “Herkey” Bishop, passed peacefully with family by his side.
