Charlie left Philadelphia at the tender age of 17 by enlisting in the US Navy. He served for 20 years and volunteered for two tours of duty in Vietnam. He saved a life. He gained the respect of the men under his command and those above his pay grade. When asked why he volunteered for duty in Vietnam twice he said "I joined to fight for and defend my country and I was honored to be able to do so." After retiring from the navy, he spent five years trying to find a new career. Finally he went to work at the FAA where he remained for 25 years. He retired at age 73 only to face yet another battle - end stage esophageal cancer. By the grace of God and the marvels of modern medicine, he lived six more years with the love of his life, Irene. He collected and read books of every genre while enjoying fine wines, thoroughly enjoyed the extra time he was granted. Charlie was one of the "good guys." Life won't be the same without him.
