Anthony graduated from Tarentum High School in 1940 and later joined the Army, serving as a Sergeant in the Signal Corp of Patton's Third Army. He witnessed firsthand the horrors of the concentration camp at Dachau, Germany. His career centered on his fruit and vegetable store located on Fourth Avenue in Tarentum and the wholesale produce business in Brackenridge, DiGirolamo Produce. He was known for making exceptionally beautiful fruit baskets, frequently receiving thank you notes from recipients. He had an artistic flair for making memorable signs advertising items on sale, and shopping at the Tarentum market was like stepping into a small shop in Italy, with bountiful displays of fruits and vegetables inside and out. Anthony was a professional musician, who played the drums with big bands such as the Glenn Norris Orchestra. He was a proud member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 630. He played at countless weddings, often returning home with a piece of wedding cake, making his wife, Ellen, something of a connoisseur. Playing drums was a talent he proudly shared with his son, Don. He was a huge sports fan, betting with his daughter, Joellen, on the outcome of each Steelers game the wager a dollar bill passed back-and-forth to the victor each weekend of the season. He enjoyed debating religion, politics and philosophy with his daughter, Susan. At the age of 92, he learned to use a Kindle. One of his first e-books was a joke book from which he learned new jokes to tell the priests at St. Margaret Mary's church in Lower Burrell each morning after mass. Anthony was a loving and devoted husband for more than 70 years to his wife, Ellen (Bello), who survives him; along with his children, JoEllen (Alan) Yeasted, Don (Susan) DiGirolamo and Susan (Tom Tonkins) DiGirolamo. He had a special fondness for each and every one of his 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. ROSENSTEIN DAVID H. OF MERCER ...
ROSENSTEIN DAVID H. Of Mercer Island, WA, and Albuquerque, NM, passed away on April 10, 2018, at the age of 83. David was a profound and independent thinker, whose warm, non-judgmental acceptance of others led to close and diverse friendships. He pursued gardening, literature, hiking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing, but he was most proud of his three careers: doctor, violinmaker, and grandpa. He poured himself into care of his patients, who knew that he'd do everything in his power for them. As his psychiatric practice wound down, he spent more time carving stringed instruments of immense beauty and exquisite function. He collected many friends around the instruments, including special ones at Bischofberger Violins in Seattle. But he'd always say that his children and grandchildren were his greatest accomplishment, as he patiently built unique connections with each. David was born December 17, 1934, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Thomas and Ann (aka Anna) (Fierman) Rosenstein. He graduated from Taylor Alderdice HS, did undergraduate studies at Washington & Jefferson College, completed medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. During medical school, he spent several months providing medical care in Israel. He also served in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army, narrowly avoiding a parachute jump into Cuba. Following medical school, David married the former Beth S. Verman on September 18, 1960. The new couple settled in Topeka, KS, where David practiced with the Menninger Clinic, until the family moved to Jerusalem in 1970. A year later, the family relocated to Albuquerque, where David made the backyard bloom with everything from sunflowers to kohlrabi. In the 1990s, David and Beth began spending part of each year in the Seattle area, eventually settling on Mercer Island to be near five of their grandchildren. Family members surviving David include his children, Ruth (Trev), Aaron (Jane), and Josh (Susie); his big brother, Yale (Barbara); and his seven grandchildren, Ezra, Aviva, Annie, Sam, Nathan, Jay, and Wendy, all of whom loved him very much. David was predeceased in 2017 by Beth after 57 years of marriage. Although he's no longer here, memories of him live within each of us. Services at RALPH SCHUGAR CHAPEL, INC., 5509 Centre Avenue, Shadyside, on Friday at 12 noon. Visitation one hour prior to services (11 a.m. - 12 noon). Those who wish may gather at Yale and Barbara Rosenstein's residence following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Menninger Clinic, 12301 Main St., Houston, TX 77035, or menningerclinic.com. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
