HOFFMAN JACQUELINE NADINE “JACKIE” Of Bethel Park, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2018. She was born in Erie, PA on March 11, 1937. She was preceded in death by her father, Gilbert Hinz; her mother, Mary Marcella (Dailey) Hinz; and her husband, Major Robert F. Hoffman, (US Army, ret.). As a child, she lived in Arizona, learning the ways of farm/ranch life with her uncle before moving back to Erie. She attended Villa Maria Academy, and graduated as a registered nurse from St. Vincent's School of Nursing 1957. She married Army Lieutenant Robert F. Hoffman in 1958, and started her career as an Army wife - with myriad responsibilities including hosting and attending formal dinners and other occasions with foreign dignitaries and high ranking Military personnel. She also worked as an officers' wives' club chairman, fulfilling obligations to charities and other organizations. She often had to uproot and move the fast-growing family over the years throughout the eastern U.S. and also India. She raised four children, often by herself, as her husband was deployed to such places as Korea, Turkey and Vietnam. The family finally settled in Pittsburgh when he retired from the military, and they all call it home to this day. She started a second career in retail, as a clerk in a local record store - due to her love of music. She was eventually promoted to store manager, growing the store year after year, then promoted to Manager at National Record Mart, main store, Downtown Pittsburgh. Along the way, she attended many concerts - meeting and mingling with many top performers of the day. She had spent the last 22 years retired, visiting all 48 continental states; “snowbirding” in Florida during winters; and traveling to her ancestral homeland of Ireland/England - all with her loving partner, Tom Cancilla. She loved life and lived life fully! She is survived by her children: Julie (the late Jim) Fitzpatrick, Mark (Becky), Robert, and Gretchen (Rich) Yerman; along with four grandchildren: Emily and Thomas Fitzpatrick, and Richard and Brandi Yerman. BACHMAN RUTH ZUCKER Lived a wonderful life and passed from this world on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the age of 91. Ruth graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University), with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing. She then joined the nursing school faculty at Presbyterian University Hospital before enrolling in the graduate school program at the University of Pittsburgh to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. She worked as a Nurse Practitioner at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh with the Tonsil and Adenoid Research study for 16 years. During this time, she held a faculty appointment with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Ruth served on various Boards and was a member of various organizations all of which held the aim that she personally held dear: social justice and community development. She served on the Board of United Mental Health Services and helped to institute and volunteered for six years with, the first-day school program for emotionally disturbed children. She also served on the Board of Pace School and was a member of the group Physicians for Social Responsibility. She retired from active medical practice in June of 1998 but continued to teach third-year medical students during their pediatric rotations at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh until 1994 when she retired from teaching. Along with her husband James, she was a lifelong member of Rodef Shalom Temple. In her later years, Ruth came to have several caregivers, many of whom became like family to her. These women cared for and loved Ruth until her passing. It is with their assistance that she could enjoy the last years of her life within the comforts of the home she had lived in for more than 30 years. Ruth was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, cousin and niece to many extended family members. Ruth was a devoted and loving wife to James Blum Bachman who preceded her in death. She was a devoted and loving mother to her daughter, Anne Bachman Tabor; her son-in-law, Steven Allan Tabor, who preceded her in death; and her son, David Allan Bachman, who also preceded her in death. She was a devoted and loving grandmother to her granddaughter, Emily Lisa Tabor; her grandson, Joshua Abram Tabor; and her granddaughter-in-law, Lindsay Joy Tabor. She was a devoted and loving great-grandmother to her great-granddaughter, Kylie Anne Tabor; and to her great-grandson, Steven James Tabor, both of whom were the light in her life when darkness closed in. She was a devoted and loving friend to many and more. From her students and general acquaintances to her closest and dearest friends, she loved and was loved. We, her family, friends and caregivers will miss her with every bit of our hearts and know that the peace she feels now will be the solace that holds us tight. The world has lost one of the greatest women of ours, or any other, time. Rest in peace, Grammy. GIGLER MICHAEL R. “MIKE” Of Mt. Lebanon, died on March 4, 2018, after a brief illness. A much-loved son, brother, father, uncle, counselor and friend to many, Mike faced his final days with the same humor, courage, grace and generosity of spirit that defined his entire life. He was born in Pittsburgh on August 21, 1945, the second child and eldest son of the late Raymond F. and Dolores C. Gigler. He graduated from St. Canice High School in 1963; after service in the U.S. Army he obtained his B.S. from Robert Morris University, his M.Ed. from Duquesne University and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He is survived by his children, Max of Austin, TX and Emily of Pittsburgh, of whom he was most proud; his sisters, Karen Henwood of Ocala, FL, Jane Means of Mt. Lebanon, Lynn Gigler of Mt. Lebanon; and his brothers, Dan Gigler and his wife, Dotty of Mt. Lebanon, Stephen Gigler of Pittsburgh and Jeffrey Gigler of Jacksonville, FL; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Mike penned his own epitaph, writing of his family with characteristic humility: "He loved them all neither wisely nor too well, but they nevertheless gave him his happiest moments by their acceptance and humor. Aside from his family, Mike would join no organization that would have him as a member, but after military service he worked as a rehabilitation, mental health and addictions counselor, hoping such service made up for some of his other lapses in the grand scheme of things. He had no organized religious beliefs but maintained a fervent hope of reincarnation, as he would dearly like a do-over. Failing that, he did not regret his time in the light between the darknesses, and hoped not many others regretted it overly much." Mike passed away in the loving embrace of his family, who not only did not regret his "time in the light" but are eternally grateful for his presence in their lives. Visitation with Mike's family will take place at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICES, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Twp. on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, from 4-8 p.m., with a Service of Remembrance and Thanks at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike's name will be accepted with appreciation by Gateway Rehab, 311 Rouser Road, Moon Township, PA 15108 (www.gatewayrehab.org.); or by Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 50 Moffett Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15243 (http://www.familyhospicepa.org/). www.slaterfuneral.com Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
