SPRINGER EUGENE “GENE” DALE, Jr. Gene Springer, of South Heights, PA passed away from natural causes on Nov. 17, 2017, at the age of 93. He was comforted by his loving family. Born Nov. 24, 1923, he was a lifelong resident of South Heights, moving to North Canton, Ohio over the last three years. He was the son of the late Eugene D. Springer, Sr. and Hattie Guynn Springer. A 1941 graduate of Ambridge High School, he began working at the American Bridge Company, but this was interrupted by WWII when he served his country in the US Navy seeing action within the Pacific Theater (Marshall Islands, Leyte, Ulithi). Benefiting from the G.I. Bill, he graduated from Geneva College with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Following work with a national CPA firm and substitute teaching at Moon Area schools, he accepted a position as an Industrial Engineer at J&L Steel Aliquippa Works and retired in 1985 with 34 years of service. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years, the former Elizabeth McCartney who died in 1992; his close friend, Anita Colarossi; and his nephew, Harry Springer. He is survived by his son, Thomas; daughter-in-law, Diana; two grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan, of North Canton, Ohio; his brother, Harlan of Panama City, Florida; sisters-in-law, Mildred Springer, Janet Springer, Veronica McCartney; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene was likeable and friendly with a witty sense of humor. He served his county as well as his country. Some of his volunteerism included auditor, planning commission and zoning board member of the Borough of South Heights, life member and secretary for 20 years of the 5 Points Hunt Club, 25-year AARP volunteer and income tax preparer, and 15-year member of the supervisory committee of the LTV No. 1 Credit Union (now West-AirComm). Socially Gene was an avid hunter, bowler, and golfer. He belonged to the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 348 for over 70 years, and was a dedicated and active 60-year member of the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church serving on various church boards including Sunday School superintendent. Visitation will be at the JOHN SYKA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge, PA 15003 from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, 2017. A memorial service will be held at the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 183 New Bethlehem Church Road, Aliquippa, PA 15001 at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017, with the Reverend Randall K. Clow, officiating. There will be viewing at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the service. Private interment will follow in the church cemetery. GIANCOLA CAROLINE (MORGANO) Caroline, age 87, formerly of Mt. Washington, PA, reposed on November 19, 2017, at the home of her daughter, Cheryl Gajdos, in Tampa, FL, after a long illness of Alzheimer's under the care of Hospice. She was born May 11, 1929, in Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter of the late Charles and Anna Morgano. Surviving are her daughters, Carol Ann Giancola, of Winston/Salem, NC and Cheryl Ann Giancola DeCaria Gajdos; and son-in-law, Mark Gajdos, of Oldsmar, FL. She is also survived by her sister, Anna Morgano Hollis, of Pittsburgh, PA; plus numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlyle "Corky" Giancola. KNOBEL RUTH M. Age 74, of Champion, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at her home. She was born Feb. 26, 1943, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Richard and Margaret Bernardi Foertsch. Ruth was employed as the church secretary for Calvary United Methodist Church in Ligonier. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron for the O.E.S. No. 526 in North Hills. She was also a member of the Bichon Frise Club of America and served with rescue operations. She cared greatly for animals and gave them compassionate care, especially those with special needs. She always put her family first. She is survived by her husband, William H. Knobel; two children, Beth A. Knobel and William R. Knobel, both of Champion; and her "fur-babies," Lady, Frankie, Cookie, Rosie, Boo, Oreo, Ashleigh, Coby, and Bailey. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the J. PAUL McCRACKEN FUNERAL CHAPEL INC., 144 E. Main St., Ligonier. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary United Methodist Church, with Pastor Joshua Ricketts officiating. FISCHER CHRISTINE KIYFES Age 94, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 25, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones. Christine was the fourth born child of Andrew Kiyfes and Anna Klarich on July 29, 1923, in Bethel Park. She was a beloved wife for 72 years of the late James Warren Fischer, where they resided in Bethel Park throughout their life. Christine is survived by her two daughters, Jacqueline Fischer Stewart (and late Dr. A. Van Stewart), Janice Fischer Currie (Keith). She is also survived by five grandchildren, Mark Stewart, Laura Stewart Taylor (Chris), Jeffery Stewart (Lori), Sarah Currie, Julie Currie; and four great- grandchildren, Madison Stewart, Cameron Taylor, Ethan Stewart, and Colin Taylor. She was the sister to the late Andrew Kiyfes (Lee), Johanna Strinic (Michael), Marion Skoncey (Michael); and survived by her sister, Elizabeth Pokrajac (George); as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Christine graduated from Bethel High School, and was active in track and cheerleading and was May Queen, just prior to her graduation in 1942. Christine was one of the few that was selected to first introduce the Bethel Park Alma Mater to the school board and student body when first composed. Christine then achieved her dream and opened the well-known Chris' Children's Shop located in Bethel Park for 39 years. Christine was a founding member of the Bethel Park Professional Women's Club and an active member in the Achates Club as well as Bethany Lutheran Church. Upon retirement, she traveled, enthusiastically supported the Bethel Park Music and Sports Programs, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She had great love for her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 25, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, 5303 Madison Ave., Bethel Park, PA. MORELAND DR. RICHARD L. Dr. Richard L. Moreland, age 66, of Wexford, PA, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, passed away at home on November 18, 2017, from natural causes associated with several illnesses. Dr. Moreland was born in St. Francis, Kansas to Richard I. Moreland and Barbera Lee Smith. The family moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he resided until graduation from the University of Colorado in 1973. Following his graduate schooling at the University of Michigan, he joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh until his retirement in 2013. He married Nancy Rudduck, of Boulder, Colorado in 1972. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; and brother, Dann Moreland, both of Wexford, Pennsylvania, brother, Joel Moreland and his wife, Deb, of Platteville, Colorado, sister, Lee Moreland Cook, of Springfield, Oregon; and sister-in-law, Arlene Rudduck, of Broomfield, Colorado; also surviving are nieces and nephews, Tracy and Matt Ray, Eddie Hudson, Holly Hudson-Cobb and Zachary Cobb, and Alyssa and Camron Stockford; many cousins and their families; and numerous friends. He was a witty, gentle, caring man, respected by his many colleagues around the world for his scientific achievements. He will be missed by all. Funeral arrangements were private. BAECHTOLD BERNARD “SLIM” F. Age 96, devoted his life to Fire Fighting, a Moon Township resident most of his life, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017, at Southwestern Veteran Center. Born in McKeesport on October 29, 1921, he was one of five to the late Walter O. and Emma J. (Keenan) Baechtold. On February 3, 1962, he married his beloved, Shirley H. (McCann) Baechtold, who preceded him in death on August 10, 2010. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Agnes Tesla; brothers, James and Raymond Baechtold; and stepson, David G. Peters; loving father of Sarah A. (Greg G.) Gray and Jennifer (Scott C.) Zimmerman; cherished stepfather of Charles D. (Maya) and Thomas A. (Connie) Peters; adored grandfather of Grace and Geoffrey; step-grandfather of Christina, Pamela, Linda, Melanie, Jordan and Tommy. Also surviving are his sister, Lois Kornaus; and sister-in-law, Shirley (wife of brother James). Slim was a WWII Navy veteran who served on the USS Rhind and USS Macon. He joined the Moon Township Volunteer Fire Department in 1941 and served 30 years as a County Fireman. An avid hunter and fisherman, he had a deep appreciation for nature. He loved to spend time at the beach and his mountain cabin in Port Allegany. He also enjoyed watching ice hockey. Visitation Wednesday 2-4, 6-8 p.m. at COPELAND'S MOON TOWNSHIP, 981 Brodhead Rd. GAINES GARY L., Sr. Gary, age 72, of McDonald, North Fayette Twp., died Wednesday, November 15, 2017. He was born February 15, 1945, in Louisville, KY a son of the late Charles and Mable Miller Gaines. Mr. Gaines was a retired US Air Force veteran, serving 20 years and six months. He later worked at the Seaman Building Center for 15 years. He enjoyed playing golf and reading and loved his dogs. Surviving are his daughter, Andrea Gaines of Pittsburgh; and his son, Gary (Lori) Gaines of Canonsburg; his sister, Charlotte Mouser of MS. KILLMEYER RICHARD P. On Sunday, November 19, 2017, Richard P. Killmeyer, age 92, died peacefully surrounded by family. Beloved husband of the late Claire (Richert) Killmeyer; father of Richard P. Killmeyer, Jr. (Denise) Killmeyer, Edward Killmeyer, Susanne Killmeyer, Michael Killmeyer, and Elizabeth (Mark) Thomas; brother of Donald W. (Barbara) Killmeyer; grandfather of Kristin Killmeyer, Brandon Kehr, Eric, Alex, and Taylor Thomas; great-grandfather of Brayden Kehr; uncle to Deacon Tim (Chris) Killmeyer and Wayde Killmeyer. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Peter J. and Mary Killmeyer of Elliott. A kind, selfless man, Rich lived his life with honor, integrity, and humility, and was a joy to be around. Richard was part of the first graduating class of North Catholic High School, in 1943, and he was honored to be inducted into The Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School Hall of Fame last year. Serving in the US Army in the Pacific in WWII, he was wounded in Okinawa and received a Purple Heart and the Silver Star for his gallantry. A retired draftsman with J&L Steel/LTV, he was a longtime member and volunteer of the Church of the Assumption. Richard was recognized as a Jefferson Awards Community Champion for his volunteer work as a tutor at Holy Family Institute. His Catholic faith was an important part of his life. He enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, reading, daily walks, Pittsburgh sports, and family get-togethers. Friends received Friday, November 24, 2017, from 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the LAWRENCE T.
