SPERLING HERBERT V., M.D. Herbert grew up in Bloomfield, PA as the son of Elvera Melaragno and Herbert V. Sperling, Sr. and brother of Angela Randolph, Maria Onufer (deceased) and Roberta Sperling (deceased). He passed away in Naples, FL on March 17, 2015, after an almost ten-year battle with cancer. As Chief of Gastroenterology at West Penn Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA), he was an accomplished and highly respected doctor and was acclaimed for his publications and clinical research. He received his M.D. at the University of Bologna, Italy in 1965 which began a lifelong love affair with his Italian heritage. He also attended St. Joseph's Military Academy, Central Catholic, Duquesne University (Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity) and Georgetown University. He was a Major in the United States Air Force and served in Vietnam at the U-Tapao Base in Thailand. Avid golfer, teacher, stock market enthusiast, history buff, art collector, accomplished photographer, chef, wine connoisseur and investor, 1st degree black belt, Division I athlete, polyglot. A true renaissance man. Herb is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Theresa Spano; and daughters, Nicole and Natalie; son, Herbert V. Sperling III (deceased). Friends received Sunday, March 22, 2015, 2 to 5 p.m. in the FULLER FUNERAL HOME, 4735 Tamiami Trail East (Naples, FL). Memorial Mass to be held on March 23, 2015, 10 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Church (Naples, FL). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor (Pittsburgh, PA), a charity that was near and dear to his heart.
