Lebanon, on Friday, March 6, 2015, went home to be with the Lord Jesus, and to rejoin his wife of over 55 years, the late Marybelle (Kenny) Cromer; devoted father of Raymond, Jr. (Katherine) of Waxhaw, NC, Anne (John) of Montgomery Village, MD, Mark of Mt. Lebanon, Mary (Treve) of San Jose, CA, David (Cheryl) of Mt. Prospect, IL, and Nanette (Jim) of Ingomar, PA; brother-in-law of Eileen Cromer; also survived by 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Cromer was born on February 15, 1923, of immigrant parents from Alsace, France, Eugene and Anna Cromer. He graduated from Carrick High School, and entered the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a BA in 1944, LLB in 1949, M. Litt in 1949 and a JD in 1949. Mr.Cromer was appointed to Officer Candidate School and went on active duty in World War II as a US Army infantryman in March of 1944. In April of 1945, he and three comrades were captured by Nazi SS Troops near the village of Schmidtstadt, Germany. In a masterful and persuasive communication exercise which would portend his highly successful law career, Mr. Cromer talked the German commander into releasing him and his fellow prisoners after only 36 hours in captivity. After returning home from the war he worked his way through Pitt Law School and married the former Marybelle Kenny from West Bend, Wisconsin. Mr. Cromer enjoyed a fulfilling and distinguished 56 year law career, which included admission to both the Pennsylvania and United States Supreme Court. His heart for his fellow man, especially those less fortunate than he, lead to his providing abundant legal and litigation services to many clients who were not in the position to secure a high level of representation. He was honored by the Allegheny County Bar Association for 50 years in the practice of law and continued working until the age of 85. During his life, he and Marybelle enjoyed extensive domestic and international travel including many visits to France and their homes in Grand Case, St. Martin and Jupiter, FL. His primary passions in life were God, family and country, as well as Pitt Panther and Pittsburgh Steeler football and photography. Family plans no viewing. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 21, 2015, at 11 o'clock at Church of the Epiphany, 184 Washington Place, Pittsburgh, PA. Public parking is available across the street. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or to the Alzheimer's Association. And when a great and good man sets, the sky of this world is luminous long after he is out of sight. Such a man cannot die out of this world. When he goes he leaves behind him much of himself.
