STEEN MARJORIE HILL OF HIGHLA...

STEEN MARJORIE HILL Of Highland Park, died on March 14, 2014, at Boston Medical Center, after a long illness, surrounded by her children, she was 91. Marjorie was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in West View. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University (Carnegie Tech) with a BFA in music performance. She was a member of the violin section of the Pittsburgh Symphony for 11 years, playing under Fritz Reiner and William Steinberg. For years she was a busy freelance violinist, working professionally until the age of 86. She was the concert mistress of the Jack Purcell Chamber Orchestra for many years. In 1987, she joined the Benedum Orchestra and played for both the Pittsburgh Opera and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. For 30 years she played every summer as a member of the Chautauqua Symphony, in Chautauqua, New York. She also taught violin privately. Her great loves in life were her family and music. She was predeceased by her husband, James T. Steen, in 2009. She is survived by her children, Robert Steen of Atlanta, GA, Elizabeth Steen of Boston, MA, and Janet Steen of West Shokan, NY; as well as her three grandchildren, Lisa Steen, Eva Donato, and Emmanuel Reich. A Memorial is being planned for late spring in Pittsburgh. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Send condolences at post-gazette.com/gb
