JOHNSON DAVID L., D.D.S. Age 82, of O'Hara Twp., passed away at home on Monday, November 5, 2018. Beloved husband of 53 years to Paula (Fox) Johnson: loving father of Dr. Michael Brooks (Anissa) Johnson of Natrona Heights, Dr. Douglas (Kate) Johnson of St. Augustine, FL and Dr. Marc (Melissa) Johnson of Fox Chapel: cherished grandfather of Grace, Hattie, Lillian, Eve, Kailyn, Ethan, Hannah, Taylor, and Baby J due 11/15/18; brother of Barbara Johnson, Michael (Pat) Johnson, Joan (John) Eves, Francis (Mary Lou) Johnson, Paula (Tom) Randecker, and the late Dr. Bruce E. Johnson (surviving wife, Jan). Dave, Dr. J, or Paps was loved and respected by many. He was born in Lock Haven, PA, where he was their state wrestling champion and quarterback of an undefeated football team. Dave earned a full athletic scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. He was Pitt's three-time intercollegiate champion and Hall of Fame inductee. Dave worked just as hard in the classroom as he did on the mat. He earned a Doctorate in Dental Medicine and went on to serve as a Dentist in the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of his enrollment, he began a residency at Shady Side Hospital in Oral Surgery. Here, he would meet his close friend and business partner, the late Dr. Robert Heape. The two went into private practice in East Liberty and later moved the practice to Aspinwall. Dave's passion for dentistry carried over to his three sons and even his wife, Paula. She was his dental assistant for many years as well as true life partner. The two shared many wonderful adventures together and she took great care of him until his final day. Dave's practice is still in Aspinwall today and proudly run by two of his sons. Outside of the office, Dave enjoyed hiking the trails of Hartwood Acres with his grandchildren. He also loved hunting in the great outdoors. Dave's desire for learning never stopped, and even into his 80s he was taking up new hobbies such as Pilates, drums, and singing. Dave's quick wit and kind heart will be missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends Friday, November 9, 2018 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Avenue, Aspinwall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association. (act.alz.org) Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
