DEVONSHIRE ROBERT WILLIAM Of Mercer, PA, passed away in his home on October 31, 2018. He was 94. Robert was born on June 10,1924, in Framingham, Massachusettes, to Irene (Mason) and Charles Devonshire. He would go on to graduate in three years from the Wharton School at The University of Pennsylvania. As a member of the U.S.Airforce 8th Division, Robert was a bombardier and navigator flying thirty-five missions over Germany and into Russia. He separated from his service honorably as a First Lieutenant. After the war, Robert started his business career at John A. Roeblings in New Jersey, later joining US Steel as the fourth employee at the startup of the Fairless Works in Eastern Pennsylvania. From the Fairless works, he went on to New York where he wrote the Annual Report for the US Steel Corporation, and then onto Spain, where he served as Director of Spanish Operations. During this time, Robert married Emma (Jones) Devonshire. In 1978, he suffered a stroke and retired from US Steel. He and Emma have lived a life of gardening and helping others in need since then. Bob and Emma enjoyed developing their farm land with lilacs, lillies, and crab apples abound. Robert was also an avid reader and loved the sounds of Big Band and Dixieland music. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Emma; sons, Roger and his wife, Mary Anne, of Trinity, Florida, and Andrew and his wife, Deborah, of Harmony, PA; four grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren; besides his parents, Robert was preceded in death by a daughter, Emma McNeel; a son, Peter; and two sisters, Marjorie and Jane. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Mercer Library.
