HAMPERS HELEN G. On Thursday, January 16, 2014, Helen G. Hampers. Beloved daughter of the late George and Pipina Hampers; sister of the late Bess Lambrou, Constantine G. Hampers, and Elizabeth Filges; aunt of Peter J. Lambrou, M.D., George J. Lambrou, Patricia Raphael, George Dardoufas, Christopher Dardoufas, and George Filges; also survived by two generations of great-nieces and nephews, including Julie M. Lambrou, Katherine B. Coan, and Christine M. Lambrou. Helen was a dedicated and active member of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Oakland for more than 60 years. In that time, she served as President and Treasurer of Philoptochos, St. Nicholas' philanthropic women's organization. Helen helped organize the first Pastoral Committee visiting hospitalized and homebound parishioners. When the country was going through rough economic times, Helen organized contributions to the Food Bank on behalf of St. Nicholas. She was a key volunteer and organizer for the church's annual food festival, serving as the Chairperson for Pastitso and known for making the best tasting loukoumathes. Helen was a dedicated third grade Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a master seamstress, teaching at the Clarissa School of Sewing and known for creating numerous costumes, aprons, and robes worn to this day by St. Nicholas members in various church activities. In 2009, Helen was honored for her decades of service to the church with a lifetime achievement award signed by Bishop Maximos. Acknowledged by many as “Aunt Helen,” she was a spiritual person, humble, kind, and genuine. She leaves a legacy of love, warmth, and compassion, virtues that she embodied by the way she lived. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street, www.freyvogelfuneralhome.com, on Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., with a Trisagion Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Monday, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
