MEEHAN JOHN A. John Alan Meehan, age 58, of McCandless Twp., formerly of Maine, died Friday, August 28, 2015, after a four year fight with cancer, which he was winning until the final round. John passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters at Kindred Hospital, located near his home outside of Pittsburgh, PA. John was born in Portland, ME on December 20, 1956, the second eldest son of Thomas Edward and Dorothy Eva (Estabrooke) Meehan. He was raised on the family farm in North Yarmouth, ME, with his brothers, Thomas, Stephen and Michael; and sisters, Mary and Caroline. John excelled in academics at Greeley High School, achieving National Merit Scholarship and graduating valedictorian of his class. He was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Maine, where he majored in Forestry. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard, and was accepted into Officer Candidate School. While an Ensign stationed in Washington, DC, he met his wife and partner of 27 years, Jacqueline Martinez, with whom he had two daughters, Cailann and Deirdre. A deployment brought the young family to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where they settled and made their home. A devoted father, John taught his children to value education through his own example, obtaining Master's degrees in Business Administration from George Mason University and in Environmental Science from Duquesne University. During his 20 year tenure with the Coast Guard, John obtained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Upon retirement from the USGS, John was employed by the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, where he helped mint hundreds of shiny new US Citizens. In the fall of 2005, John volunteered with FEMA in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. A lifelong outdoorsman and passionate environmentalist, John returned to the Coast Guard, in the Office of Operations and Environmental Standards, as the Program Manager writing and implementing regulations regarding dry cargo residue in the great lakes ( 79 FR 5261)! John was a highly respected expert in his field. An incredibly modest man, he never bragged to his family about his career accomplishments. A talented nature photographer, John loved exploring and photographing America's national parks with his family. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, and was an avid history buff. He was known by his friends, family and colleagues for his intelligence and generous spirit. A private Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, in Pine Grove Cemetery in North Yarmouth, ME.
