ROBERT GOIN "BOB" Bob Goin, family man, Hall of Fame athletic administrator, coach, visionary and mentor, died suddenly on October 12, 2019 from complications of a heart attack in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Bob was an amazing husband to his wife of 62 years, Nancy (Glasstetter); father of four children, Doug (Carol), Brian (Marshia), Janice (Charlie) Lowe and Bruce (Whitney); grandfather to Nicole, Robert, Andrew, Zachary, Mathew and JD; great-grandfather to: Madison, Gage, Bella, Kain, Autumn and Sofia. He was Coach, Director or role model to 100's of former players and students at Bethany College, West Virginia University, Florida State University and the University of Cincinnati. Bob's story started on October 3, 1936, born to Joseph and Ludie Goin, in Gary, Indiana. He was the youngest of eight children (Mary Bouque, Louise Paul, Virgil Goin, Georgianne Maretich, Jomarie Kowalenko, Pam Grieco, and Frank Goin) with all of whom he is now reunited. At the age of twelve, he moved to Verona, PA, where he became an accomplished football, basketball and baseball player at Penn Hills (PA) high school until his graduation in 1955. He was twice named Athlete of the Year and he is a member of the Penn Hills High School Sports Hall of Fame. He was the first in his family to graduate from High school and a first generation college student graduating with a BS in Sociology from Bethany College (WV) in 1959, followed by a Masters degree in Higher Education from West Virginia University. While a student at Bethany he was a two sport standout and team captain in football and basketball. He returned to Bethany as an assistant football coach in 1960 and served as the Head football coach from 1963-1972, where his teams won conference championships in 1965 and 1966, with the 1966 team going undefeated. He continues as the winningest coach in Bethany football history. During his time at Bethany, he coached baseball, winning conference championships in 1965 and 1969, and as Athletic Director and head of the Physical Education Department until leaving Bethany in 1975. He is a member of the Bethany College Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 1991, was the recipient of the Bethany College Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award. During his tenure at Bethany he was honored in 1966 as the Tri-State coach of the year by the Pittsburgh Curbstone Coaches Association and Honored by the Post-Gazette Dapper Dan Club for outstanding Achievement in college Football in 1966. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and in 2005 was included in the inaugural class of the Phi Kappa Tau Hall of Fame. He also served on the College's Board of Trustees. He always referred to Bethany College as "his college". He served as Assistant Athletic Director at West Virginia University and Athletic Director at California State University (PA) between 1975 and 1981. In 1981, he began a 14-year stint at Florida State University - nine years (1981-89) as Associate Athletic Director and five years (1990-94) as Athletic Director. In 1991, he spearheaded the Seminoles' entry into the Atlantic Coast Conference. His Vision included expansion of Doak Campbell Stadium by adding over 20,000 seats, adding classrooms to the buildings wrapped around the stadium and the completion of The Coyle E. Moore Athletics Center. During his tenure the Seminoles earned their first national football championship and first Heisman Trophy winner in 1993. From 1997, until his retirement in 2005, he proudly served the University of Cincinnati as its Athletic Director. His leadership and vision lead to the creation of the Richard E. Linder Varsity Village and the Bearcats entry into the Big East Conference. During his service to the University the Bearcats football team participated in its first bowl game in over 50 years. In 2002, he received The General Robert R. Neyland Lifetime Achievement Award from the All-American Football Foundation. The Bob Goin Team Meeting Room at the University of Cincinnati was dedicated in November 2005 and he is a member of the University of Cincinnati Athletic Hall of Fame. During his Athletic Administration Career, he served on the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet and the NCAA Football Bowl Certification Subcommittee. After his tetirement, he lived in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, near family and friends. He was an active member of the Ponte Vedra United Methodist Church. In 2015, he was honored to be inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (http://westernpasportshof.org/football-2-2/) and The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. With all of his accomplishments and time in the spotlight, his lasting legacy is how he served as the wind beneath the wings of his family and others whose lives he touched as a teammate, coach, leader, mentor and friend. BERNADINE McMAHON Bernadine McMahon, age 64, of Mount Lebanon passed away peacefully on October 8th, 2019 surrounded by her loved ones after a brief, but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Bernadine was born March 29, 1955 in Heidelberg to Chester and Margie (DeMarco) Krawczynski. Throughout her entire life, Bernadine always nurtured those around her. The oldest of four girls, she often served as a source of wisdom to her sisters. In 1977, she married her high school sweetheart and devoted herself to their family. Over the years, Bernadine relished in all aspects of being a wife, mother, and grandmother, often recounting memories of raising her three boys or welcoming all six of her grandbabies into this world with a glow that will always be remembered. At holidays, she could be found stirring a pot of sauce or switching out her apron for a swaddle blanket at the slightest hint of need. Bernadine is survived by her parents; husband, Timothy McMahon; sons, Douglas (wife Nikki), Michael (wife Monica), and Brian (girlfriend Kathy); grandchildren, Adeline, James, Ethan, Ian, Jude, and Adia; sisters, Frances Flynn (husband, John), Susan Goldstein (husband, Irv), and Gloria Riedl (husband, Mike); a loving uncle, and many cousins, nephews and nieces whom she loved. Born Feb. 28, 1933 in Clairton, she was a daughter of the late Vincent and Louise (Volpe) Macioce-Mancini. She was an owner and proprietor, along with her late husband, of DeRubeis Bar and Grille in Clairton, a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, the Sons of Columbus of America, Regina- Della Valle, Council No. 40 where she was president for 34 years, and a volunteer at McKeesport Hospital. She was very active with church functions, the St. Paulinus Church Bazaar, and Clairton Fireman's Fair. She was also an honorary graduate of the Clairton High School Class of 2019. Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her late husband of 25 years John B. DeRubeis, who passed away on July 7, 1975. Mary is survived by her children Madeline L. LOIS ADELE REES Lois Adele Rees, 87, of Charlotte, NC, passed away October 12, 2019. She was born in Toronto, Ontario on May 15, 1932. Lois graduated from University of Toronto with a degree in Occupational Therapy. She married Glyn Treharne Rees on February 25, 1956. Lois and Glyn immigrated to the United States in 1964 and settled in Pittsburgh, PA. One of her proudest moments was when she and Glyn became naturalized Americans in 1991. Lois pursued a meaningful career in occupational therapy in Toronto. She interrupted her career for 20 years to pursue the important job of motherhood and homemaking. She returned to occupational therapy in 1975, working for South Hills Health System in Pittsburgh. In 1980, Lois started her own practice, Occupational Therapy Services, where she developed creative solutions to help people with physical limitations perform the activities of daily living in their homes. After retiring in 1989, Lois and Glyn moved to Bonita Springs, FL, where they built a beautiful, welcoming home. Lois loved Florida's warm weather, watching birds inhabiting the lagoon she could see from her back windows, and the many friendships she had there. After her husband died, Lois moved to Plantation Estates Senior Living Community in Charlotte, NC to be close to her son, John and his family. She quickly became an active member of the community. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and a former Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association. She enjoyed quilting, bridge and her book clubs, and was active in the churches in all the places she lived. However, Lois' greatest love was for her family and many friends. She liked entertaining and for many years hosted a lovely holiday open house for family, friends and neighbors in Pittsburgh. At her core, Lois was a woman of great faith and spirituality. Her entire life and how she chose to live was an expression of her faith. She is survived by her children, Linda Rees-Christianson (Steve), David Rees (Wendy), and John Rees (Lisa); and six grandchildren, Hayley, Alec, Gavin, Morgan, Sasha, and Rita. She is also survived by her brother, Ross (Dawn), Erin Amstutz (niece), Sean Kennedy (nephew); and three great-nephews. All will remember her as a model of how to live a life of love and grace. RICHARD A. THORNTON Richard A. Thornton, better known as Dick, was employed in the banking industry for more than 30 years, during which time he rose to the position of President and CEO, becoming the first black to attain this position in the City of Pittsburgh in banking. During the late 80's and early 90's when many mergers began occurring, Dick held positions with other banks as Senior Vice President and Executive Vice President and retired in the position of Senior Vice President in charge of the Community Reinvestment Program for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh. Upon his retirement from the FHLB, he became the Executive Director of Pittsburgh 2000, which was an organization developed with funds from the Billy Graham Crusade held in Pittsburgh. During Dick's tenure with Pittsburgh 2000, he worked with Pittsburgh churches of all denominations in an attempt to have them come together. This was met with the successful presentation of two Celebrations in which thousands of Pittsburghers of all denominations came together for prayer and praise at one of the local arenas. Dick has served on the Board of Directors of many organizations and institutions over the years of his employment and retirement and more recently served as Chairman of the Board of Dwelling House Savings and Loan Association in Pittsburgh for 14 years until its closing in 2009. He served on the board of One by One, a Naples Foundation, and as Treasurer for the Board of Maple Brooke Neighborhood Association, the neighborhood in which he and his wife Yvonne reside in Naples, and he also managed Satellite Office Network, Inc., an outsourcing company in which he began that provides employment opportunities for physically challenged persons to work their homes. Dick was the proud father of three sons, Michael of Atlanta, Todd of Los Angeles, and Troy of New York City, and was the grandfather of five boys and three girls. His viewing will be on Friday, October 18, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m at HODGES FUNERAL HOME, 525 111th Avenue N., Naples, Florida. On Saturday, October 19, 2019, there will be a second viewing at 10 a.m. to noon, and the memorial service will follow at the First Presbyterian Church at 250 Sixth Street S., Naples, Florida. LAURENCE A. WINTER Age 84, peacefully passed Monday, October 14, 2019, at the Little Sisters of the Poor. Survived by Patricia (Jouver) Winter, his wife of 60 years. Son of the late William and Margaret (Wallisch) Winter. Larry was born July 28, 1935. Brother of Bishop William Winter and James (Marlene) Winter; father of Larry (Chris) Winter, Mike (the late Donna) Winter, Paul (Julie) Winter, Mark (Lisa) Winter and Patrick (Michelle) Winter; loving grandfather of 11 grandchildren: Katie, Bill, Paul, Adam, Hannah, Nolan, Nick, Jaimie, Rowan, Ryan and Julianna; beloved great-grandfather of seven: Colton, Jackson, Lily, Landon, Caiden, Liam and Parker; he was an uncle to a niece and three nephews. He was a devoted father and husband. He was born in Beechview, grew up in Baldwin where he graduated from St. Wendelin High School. His career was as a Computer Programmer. He later resided in Pleasant Hills for over 30 years and Finleyville for 13 years. Larry enjoyed coaching his sons for Carrick little league baseball games. He always attended games and events for his boys and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, camping at his place the Moraine Family Campgrounds, and socializing at the local Willock and Dutch Clubs. Larry was devoted to his Catholic faith and he spent the last year of his life living at The Little Sisters of the Poor and caring for his wife, Pat. At the end of his life he was lovingly cared for by the Sisters there. Family will receive visitors Friday 3-8 p.m. at Little Sisters of the Poor, 1028 Benton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15212. MARGARET FLORENCE SLOAN MARGAR...
MARGARET FLORENCE SLOAN Margaret Florence Sloan, lifelong Pittsburgh resident, died peacefully on October 13, two days before her 102nd birthday. She lived mostly in Aspinwall, then Lighthouse Point in Fox Chapel and finally The Willows at Presbyterian SeniorCare in Oakmont. She was the daughter of Walter Roy Sloan and Anna Bell Sloan, and sister of Dorothy Sloan Ahl (Charles) and John Andrew Sloan (Ada), all of whom preceded her in death. She graduated in 1938 from Westminster College in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. An essential member of the family business, Sloan Brothers Company, started in 1922, she was administrative assistant first to her father, Walter R. Sloan, and then to her brother, John A. Sloan. The company still thrives under fourth-generation management. Among the many travels she enjoyed were visits to Scandinavia, the Philippines, the Panama Canal, Cuba, Prague, and a voyage on the QE2 to the United Kingdom. She had a wide circle of friends, including a group of women who formed an investment club. She used some of the profits of those investments to take seven of her teenaged nieces and nephews on the adventure of their young lives to the 1964 World's Fair in New York City. Those family survivors are Andrew K. Sloan (Beth) of Pensacola, FL; Judith S. Neyhart (Jeffrey) of Bonita Springs, FL; Nancy Sloan (Robert Erdeljac) of Oakmont, PA; Walter R. Sloan (Natalie) of Gibsonia, PA; Anne A. Werth of Edgewood, PA; David S. Ahl (Tina) of Rye, NY; and Barbara A. Watkins (Scott) of Suttons Bay, MI. She is also survived by 11 great-nieces and nephews and 13 great-great-nieces and nephews. Her entire church life was spent in the congregation of Third Presbyterian Church in Shadyside, where she served as one of the first female deacons in 1966. She was an enthusiastic supporter of a wide variety of Pittsburgh cultural organizations, including the Pittsburgh Symphony, Ballet Theatre, Cultural Trust, Public Theater, the Frick and the Heinz History Center, to name a few. The greater Pittsburgh community as well as her surviving family members remember her as a wonderfully kind, gracious, generous, and welcoming human being. She will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at Third Presbyterian Church, 5701 Fifth Ave., Shadyside, PA 15232, on Friday, November 8, at 11:00 am.
